Can anyone recommend books for very fluent (almost) y1 child - with colour pictures?

Ds will be starting y1 in September. He's had a massive spurt with reading and is devouring books at home.

He can do all our picture books with very little trouble - familiarity might help here though as he has an epic memory.

I got out a couple of 'Sprinters' books - Jeremy Strong's Giant Jim and Colin McNaughton. Ds freaked and refused to try them as they didn't have colour pictures. Confused

He's still very young so I totally understand his need for colour pictures, but I also think he would really like a more challenging read iyswim.

We're off to the library this morning to do their reading challenge. :)

Take him to the library every week- not only does he get the excitement of choosing his own but they generally grade the early readers.

only had a quick scan through of replies but I would agree Usborne First Reading series 1 is great, for non fiction their Beginners series is really very good and their See Inside books are a big hit with my inquisitive girls.

The Witches Dog books by Frank Rodgers are nice, not too long, not too many sentences on a page, colour pictures and fun stories.

Julia Donaldson - the Quick Brown Fox Cub and The Wrong Kind of Bark are good (we have them as a combined book - Animals in school I think it is called).

The Lighthouse Keeper books by Ronda and David Armitage are lovely, great colour illustrations, fun stories, longer than a normal picture book but not overwhelming. They have been printed in chapter book format now too.

The Paddington picture story books are lovely with great colour illustrations and everyone loves Paddington.

I can highly recommend this set on The Book People.

Even though it says 'Levels 1-4', each book actually has a 'Book Band' equivalent on it (most schools use coloured book bands) and they go right up to at least level 10. The books start from about Level 4 equivalent.

DD is on Book Band 8 (purple) (also just finished Reception) but has been reading all of the books. They're fab, really lovely. There are stories that your DS will recognize aswell as more modern characters (Charlie and Lola, Moshi Monsters, Harry and his dinosaurs etc).

They are really very good.

I would second (third?) the Roald Dahl recommendation - Fantastic Mr Fox is great fun and available in a large format colour picture book.
