Hi, I am moving to Barrow-in-Furness in about two months because of my job. I have a daughter with primary school age, so looking for good schools. Also, would like to get some general feedback about the town - nicer parts to live, safety, etc...

thanks Bunnyjo - it is a dilemma now - nice place, longer commute (or) less commute with not so great place to live. Regarding schools, Barrow itself has some great schools with outstanding ofsted report (Yarlside, Chetwynde, etc), however based on the reviews and comments above, it seems like Barrow is the not the safest place to live.

Hi I am an 'outsider' who has lived in Barrow now for nearly 3 years. Barrow is not dangerous!!!! I have lived in big cities all my life before coming here and have found this to be the safest place I have lived! Crime rate is very low (particularly violent crime) and, yes, the closer you get to Barrow centre itself the 'rougher' it is but the areas on the outskirts, near the Hospital, the Sixth Form College, Newbarns, Roose areas are all very nice. The commute from Kendal is long as there is only one road into Barrow so you will have to be prepared for that. Ulverston is definitely an option for commuting in, but, having lived in places like York before I don't see it as posh - it is a bit pretentious thinking it is really, but it is a pleasant enough place. The only thing I get frustrated with in Barrow is the lack of good shopping - have to head to Manchester for that.
There is a lot of deprivation here, and linked to that low aspiration/mental health issues, but this is generally for people who have grown up here with parents who have lost jobs/never worked - in your case your dc will be growing up with both parents in employment so their life experience will be different anyway.
Just don't want you to think it is some really rough, dangerous place because it simply isn't...

Hi! Husband is considering moving us from the very south of England to Lake District. Worried about what a teenage boy will find to do and it seems so far away from where we currently live BUT the south of England is soooo busy/congested and equally worried about teenage boy in this environment arrrgh. Parents originally come from Carlisle so I know Carlisle to visit but now to live. I have read so many conflicting views on Carlisle and so many nice reviews about the Lakes, just concerned if I moved family to Kendal/Windermere or Penrith that they won't have things like Cadets, Theatreschool, or am I just being daft! Help. Any advice would be more than appreciated.

Hiya, I know this is an old thread... But was after some advice from people about nice places to live within an easy commute of barrow in furness. So I'm hoping someone might read it. My husband has just accepted a job there and we will be looking to move to the area within the next 4 months from the South East. We have been to Ulverston and that seems OK. We love the villages in the national park.. But feel that could be too far. Are there any pretty villages closer to barrow that anyone can recommend? We also have a son who's primary school age so schools need to be good too. Thanks 😊

Ulverston is your best bet to get into secondary
