Hi
MY daughter has failed this again. She really does not have a good grasp of phonics. Any one got any suggestions how I can help over the summer. School have told me not to worry every time I brought it up!

Is there something else rather than phonics we could try?
How can she get a 2b level and fail phonics test?
Thanks

When do they carry out the intervention? Is it in addition to or is a substitute for normal lessons?

Tbh Mrz, I don't know. The school is very secretive and don't like parents to know anything.

If he's sent off every day while the rest of the class are being taught something new the gap will just grow. Interventions need to be in addition to good teaching not replace it.

Thanks Mrz and everyone else. Very helpful info.

I would have failed the phonics test in year 2. I also read Lord of the Rings trilogy that year.
My dsis, who was taught exactly the same as me never needed to be taught phonics it was just "obvious to her".

Some fortunate children work it out for themselves (so wouldn't fail the phonics screening check because they have the skills and knowledge to tackle unfamiliar words when they meet them) others need to be taught explicitly. Both groups benefit from direct teaching. Those children who really struggle with the check are the ones most at risk of reading failure later on when the vocabulary in the books their reading exceeds their word knowledge.

Sounds like Reading Rescue needs to be added to this page
