Y6 Sats

Finally got my Dd's Sats results. She has 5 for some and 6 for others. No explanation with it. Is it only 5 or 6 or could they get 5a, 5b etc. I am clueless. Hardly had any information from her secondary school so I don't know if they use them to set the children.

Thanks

The government only issues whole levels in Year 6. so 5 or 6. It is possible for schools to sub level the results if they want to but there is no requirement to do so. Our authority system churns out sheets for inclusion in reports that just has the whole levels on, I tell the children the sub levels once they have their reports.

HouseofEliot · 11/07/2014 20:27

Thanks. Her report just has scores for effort 1, 2 or 3 and attainment A, B or C. There are no levels.

The secondary school will do their own assessment on entry- some sort of CAT test. The SATs are useless to Secondary schools.

spanieleyes · 11/07/2014 20:29

But you said 5's and 6's, these are her SATs levels, we give ours out with reports, your school clearly doesn't.
If you want a sub level you will have to ask ( or ask for the test scores and we can work out the sublevels for you!!)

spanieleyes · 11/07/2014 20:31

The SATS aren't useless to secondary school as these are the levels from which they need to measure progress over the coming 4/5 years. whether they retest or not, these are the levels the children have achieved and these are the ones against which progress will be judged. ( until levels are disbanded!!)

spudmasher · 11/07/2014 20:35

I do not know of any secondary that sets children on the basis of SATs results. They are not an accurate reflection of skills, knowledge or potential. I feel so sorry that secondaries have this ridiculous measurement as their baseline.

HouseofEliot · 11/07/2014 20:35

Sorry the report is ABC/123 then there is a separate sheet with Sats levels 5/6.

Is there a SATS level then a Teacher Assessment level?

HouseofEliot · 11/07/2014 20:40

No just her report that lists each subject and a bit about it with a score ABC/123.

The seperate sheet lists the Sats papers and next to each one it says 5 or 6.

That's the "official" version then, it looks like you might need to ask for the "unofficial" one!

HouseofEliot · 11/07/2014 20:45

Ok thanks. Will ask next week.

Our sheet just had whole levels, both teacher assessed and test results where relevant, but the kids had a 1-1 with their teacher where they were told their sub-levels and individual scores from the tests (though DS has failed to retain all of them unsurprisingly).

Hopefully you use the teacher assessment level and not the actual test itself.

spanieleyes · 12/07/2014 13:21

You MIGHT use teacher assessments for setting but you HAVE to use KS2 SATS test levels to measure progress against.

mrz · 12/07/2014 13:43

"The SATs are useless to Secondary schools." unfortunately completely untrue as secondary schools are set targets based on statutory KS2 tests (SATs) not on their internal tests.

mrz · 12/07/2014 13:49

All my local secondary schools use KS2 SATs to allocate classes in Y7

CATs don't accurately measure against the NC as they measure something totally different cognative ability!

About secondary setting....
DD's school did CAT testing in July of yr6, they got their timetables on first day of yr7. There were some minor movements all year, especially in first 6 weeks of term.

Mid June of yr7, they all got new timetables (for yr8). There were massive moves. DD can detail which of her friends moved down and up in which subjects, many moved at least 2 sets with 3 set moves not unheard of. One girl seems to have ended up in top English just because her mother moaned at school, though. Shock

Anyway, to my mind, it proves that sets are porous, as they should be. And that CATs aren't that great for predicting where they belong, either.

DD2's prospective school does initially set based on SATs, then reviews very actively at autumn half term.

Her current primary gave out results yesterday, SATs test levels by subject with teacher assessed levels alongside.

She got Level 6 SPaG but not maths or reading, no surprise there, but is TA L6 in English reading and writing, L5 in maths and science. She's worked hard, has done very well and will end up in top set at her secondary based on these results, which is what really matters. What happens after that is between her and her teachers.

KingscoteStaff · 12/07/2014 19:31

Wow, pointythings, your DD has done brilliantly to get L6 in Writing. We had none this year!

Good for her.

pointythings · 12/07/2014 23:05

It's 'only' TA, Kingscote so no doubt Michael Gove would say it doesn't count... But truth be told the school is harsh in its marking so I am very proud. I am even more proud of her L5 in maths though - DD2 is good at maths but refuses to believe it. An inspirational TA (lady with a maths degree!) has made all the difference this year, she has been amazing.

DD2 is a natural writer, it is just her 'thing'. She reads very widely and uses the vocab she picks up to very good effect..
