DD2 was evaluated at l6 in maths at the end of Y5 last year, together with 2 other children (boys). They'd been doing extension work all year. She has had a very very boring Y6. Because what they didn't do was take her any further this year. She has older siblings so has had access to maths work up to l8 (her brother's level) but at school? Nada.

Hi old teacher here who has seen sats in all guises from the start!
One of my own sons was particularly interested and gifted at maths from an early age. His yr 2 teacher thought it would be "fun" to give him the yr 6 paper. This was back in 1999. Wouldnt happen now as evidence other than test would be required. Despite not having covered all the topics eg ratio, he scored enough points to be labelled level 6! Which was absurd, as other posters have said passing the test does not necessarily give the child an all round complete level 6 ness if you see what I mean. They might not have the breadth of mathematical experiences to be a true level 6.

By the way I am not playing top trumps maths! He obviously was not anything anywhere near a level 6 aged 7!

No one is arguing that level 5 in year 5 is not excellent, or that some children who can scrape a pass at level 6 are not actually level 6. However, there are children who are level 6 in year 5 and it is sometimes very difficult to get the school to recognise this and give the child an appropriate education. Other schools can achieve this.

You can work to Level 6, in our school. But no one does formal tests in Y5, so it wouldn't be 'proven'.
