School and antibiotics

DD has been diagnosed with a mild throat infection. The doctor says she is fine to go to school.

Her antibiotics have to be adminstered 6-hourly, an hour before meals which would mean she would need them around 11.30am-ish.

Are schools allowed to give prescribed antibiotics out? I can go down and do it myself with no problems as I am off work this week but I want to ensure as little disruption to her class/teacher as possible.

I can't find any info on the school website and I have emailed them.

TIA wise ones.

Some schools do and some schools don't, but to be honest, if you're able to pop down and do if then I would advise that. That time would be in the middle of lesson time and I know if forget if it was a child in my class, whereas if you pop down the secretary can just nip and get DD and job done.

Far too many 'ifs'! Sorry! You get the jist :-)

Indeed I do Wink. Thanks for replying. I really want to avoid any major disruption so your suggestion is probably the best.

So dose 1 will be at 5.30am? My school doesn't so we do a dose immediately before school one immediately after and one before bed. This seems to work fine. Obviously I'd be much more exacting for a serious illness but I suspect a mild throat infection will be ok. They'll be having snack not much more than an hour into school so that should be ok?

EatDessertFirst · 07/07/2014 20:19

You are correct Today one dose will be at 5.30-6am. She is normally up and about at this time though so that one isn't too much of an issue. The 11.30pm one may be harder though!
The doctor was very specific about the time between the four doses so I'm trying to find a happy medium. its not easy!! Smile

Will you wake her at 11.30pm to give her the dose?

EatDessertFirst · 07/07/2014 20:51

Yep. She'll be fine, honestly. She suffered a lot with tonsillitis when she was younger and is a pro at taking meds then going straight back to sleep. She never even remembers it.

(It'll be hard for me because I'm normally in the land of nod by then!)

My school would do it, but you'd have to fill in a form giving permission. But as Reese said, if you go down and do it you know it's happened. So much else will be going on, it might get overlooked. Also, if you keep hold of the medicine you avoid the problem of it being left in the school fridge overnight...

Jellyandjam · 07/07/2014 22:25

Our school also does it. You have to fill in a form and the medicine is kept in the office.

Jellyandjam · 07/07/2014 22:27

Sorry in a fridge I mean but office staff deal with it!!

I hadn't even thought about the fridge issue. I think going in myself will be for the best. Thank you for all your replies.

My dd's school will give them for antibiotics prescribed for four times a day but not for those prescribed for three times a day.

lougle · 08/07/2014 07:01

I have DDs at two schools. If the abx are 4x daily they would do it. If not, they would expect you to give them before school, after school and in the late evening.
