Would you expect your child's academic levels to change over 6 months?

Sorry, it's that time of year where we all get school reports and we struggle to understand them.

At dd1's last parents evening we were shown what level she was working at in maths, literacy and reading, she was scoring 5c's and 5b's, her teacher said the he thinks her maths maybe higher but due to the way they are tested at this age it was hard to tell, this was 6 months ago, today we received her report and I was expecting her to be getting 5a's to show she was progressing but her levels were the same as they were 6 months ago.

I'm not disappointed as she is doing very well, just thought I would see them rise a little bit by the end of the year as surely most children progress through the year?

I wouldn't necessarily expect levels to change.

If someone just scraped into a 5c then 2 terms later I could see they might be just missing a 5b. The sub levels appear to be a bit subjective anyway.

Have levels improved since end last academic year?

I'd agree that you need to take a longer view than 6 months to get a sense of whether she's 'progressed' or not.

Development of any sort isn't linear.

So in answer to your question 'not necessarily', although over a full academic year I would be concerned if there hadn't been any change recorded.

Thank you, that makes sense ( school reports always confuse me ), she has made progress since last years report, last years were 4's. She will be going I to year 6 in September.
