TA in KS2

just wondering if there are any TA's on here who can help me. I have an interview this week for a TA position in a KS2 class. The school doesn't know what year yet just that it will be in KS2. To the interview I have to take a storybook suitable for a KS2 child and any supplementary evidence. I currently work 1:1 with a SEN yr 1 child and also do supply in KS1, so am a bit nervous of how different KS2 is. Also any recommendations of good story books to take and discuss, as have had no experience with this age group. My worry is the wide age group anything between 7 and 11!!!! So a 7 yr old isn't going to appreciate the same story or book as an 11 yr old. any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

Try some of the visual literacy books, they appeal to a wide range of children, something by Andrew Browne might suit.

Might be worth having a look at the Curriculum for years 4 & 5 and see if you can find a book which matches something they have been working on.

I was an Infant school TA for ten years, but also did recorder and computer clubs with the companion Junior school. I then had two years in a tough comprehensive, and that was daunting at first. When I retired I continued voluntary work for several years.

When I had to prepare an interview for a Yr6 job I read Anne Fine's "Diary of a Killer Cat" which is a brilliantly funny book! I think it's more about interaction, control, keeping the children stimulated and entertained than worrying too much about 'levels' or 'education'.

Humour always helps, and I often suggest people make a DELIBERATE mistake; see how the children pick up on it, and it shows them you are Human!

Squash kids who want to dominate, and encourage shy, reluctant ones; try to give everyone a turn. Take any artefacts or novelties you have made, or that might amuse the kids.

Reading, go a bit OTT maybe, or invite comments or 'acting' bits from children.

Good luck, and ENJOY!
