Trousers for reception DD vs skirt/dresses

DD, who will be 4 mid august, so one of the youngest in the class. Shopping for school uniform atm, and wondering whether to buy trousers instead of dresses or skirts. She is not a big fan of dresses anyway and she sometimes needs help at home (but manages at nursery seemingly) to go for a wee whilst wearing a dress, i.e I have to hold the dress up, similar with skirts. She is physically small for her age also.
Has anyone here opted for trousers over skirts or dresses for this reason or will she manage anyway once she is at school?

My dd had a skirt, a dress and a pair of trousers, then she had a choice. She usually wore a dress, and more recently i've realised this is the more practical option, particularly in reception, as a grey pinafore doesn't show the dirt as much as the white polo shirt she wore underneath.

Of course with dd2 all bets are off as she manages to make whatever she wears each day filthy, who knew you could need a new pinafore every day? Not I!

If she prefers trousers and finds them easier to go to the toilet etc in them, that's what I would get. Lots of kids have accidents in the first few weeks because they are too distracted by the New environment - helping them as much as you can is a good idea!

nonicknameseemsavailable · 30/06/2014 12:32

whatever she is most comfortable in definitely.

My 2 hate trousers so they weren't an option but in their classes there is a real mix of girls wearing pinafores, skirts or trousers.

Seeline · 30/06/2014 12:34

My DD had all three. Trousers can be quite hot in overheated primary schools, so she usually wore those in the cold winter months.
Pinafores definitely save on the washing.

We bought summer dresses, jersey pinafore dresses and jersey trousers. She mainly wore trousers, but has started wearing dresses more now we're near the end of YR

LiegeAndLief · 30/06/2014 12:40

Mine had trousers to begin with because she couldn't take the pinafore style dress off for PE. Now she's in summer dresses which are much easier as they button all down the front so she can just unbutton and then step out of them.

Just check what your school allows as our school only allow girls to wear trousers when winter uniform is in effect (not the whole of the summer term and not until after October half term). Also our DD was the only girl wearing trousers and asked to change to pinnafores as she didn't want to be the odd one out.

Hakluyt · 30/06/2014 14:56

Get both and give her a choice, she will probably want to wear what her friends are wearing.

BikeRunSki · 30/06/2014 14:57

Ds is in Reception. Plenty of the girls wear trousers.

mrsmortis · 30/06/2014 15:02

Skirts are easier to manage when the toilets are the right height. Do they have low toilets for the children at nursery? That might explain why she can manage there but not at home.

My DD is very skinny and we had issues with skirts and trousers not staying up. Even the adjustible ones because she has no butt. So she's spent reception in pinafore dresses and summer dresses. You can get both with front zips for ease of dressing and undressing...

DD has trousers, her big brothers hand-me-down shorts, pinafores, summer dresses and skirts. She mainly wears the trousers and shorts. The dresses and skirts have been worn once or twice.

My DD had culottes, pinafore and trousers in winter. The pinafores were great for keeping tshirts clean but only got work about 6 times! My DD just wanted trousers once it was cold. We ended up with loads of M&S age 2-3 tailored ones when she first started at school nursery as she was still 3 and little. They have adjustable waist. In summer she wears a summer dress some times but mainly girls school tailored shorts as she hates skirts. Trousers can look very smart and are very practical - they are outside a lot at our school

bearwithspecs · 30/06/2014 16:35

At our school loads of the girls in reception wear trousers, especially further up school. I think it's becoming more common. One of our other local schools says skirts only, but have seen a couple of the girls from here in trousers too. Another school recommends trousers only.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/06/2014 16:36

Mine (now 8) has always had a mixture. Trousers are useful in winter if she would struggle to get tights on and off by herself for PE. On the other hand they get dropped to the floor to go to the toilet and the toilets of infants schools are not always pristine. She does wear pinafores sometimes but given a free choice she nearly always picks something else.

Thank you for all your replies. I asked DD yesterday would she prefer dresses or trousers, and now she says dresses Hmm
The school has lots of girls wearing trousers, even in Reception so she won't be the odd one out certainly.
Yes I think I will go for a mixture of skirts/dresses/trousers and see what she likes...although it might be a recipe for disaster as she is very akward to dress in the mornings...vetoing almost everything we suggest. Having one option might be easier..will have to have a think.

Skirts are the best

Have you seen the toilet floors in a reception class?

Trousers puddling on the floor may well end up in a ...erm...puddle!

ReallyTired · 01/07/2014 17:30

I would get your daughter a mixture. Trousers are good in winter as they keep your child warm. However trousers wear out a lot quicker than skirts or dresses. dd has wrecked pairs of trousers playing football with the boys.

nappyaddict · 02/07/2014 14:33

I think trousers, shorts and skorts/culottes are most practical.
