Just got ds (7) information booklet for the rest of the term and there is a bit in it about Chicken pox, stating that it is VITAL that you contact the school if you think that your child may have chicken pox because IT IS IMPERATIVE to the wellbeng of a new Primary 1 pupil. I was just wondering as it is a normal childhood thing to catch, what is actually wrong with the poor wee mite that its so bad to catch! Anyone any ideas what condition the wee one might have?

Chicken pox is extremely dangerous to people with low immunity. This can be for all sorts of reasons. For instance if they have some kind of cancer and have recently undergone chemotherapy, or a dose of steroids.

Transplanted anything (kidney, bone marrow, liver heart)
Chemotherapy (generally cancer for children other conditions unlikely in a ?5/6 year old)
Steroids/some other tablets for arthritis/possibly asthma/eczema/skin conditions
There are some skin complaints that are much worse when someone has chicken pox although I would have thought school again less likely to worry about this than some of the things above)
Probably some others too if we all think hard enough.
Poor wee mite. What a worry for the parents.
