How often do you wash your child's water bottle from school?

Our school sends the bottles home on Fridays for parents to wash. Since they only have water in them, I think that's fine. They don't need cleaning more often (imo).

2 of the other mums with a child starting reception this week are HORRIFIED. They also restrained themselves from saying that I'm a slattern, for thinking once a week is fine. They think bottles should be washed daily.

Just wondered, what do other schools do, parents think?

Daily-even if only water should not be left for a week imo.

Blu · 07/09/2006 12:56

Every day.
Sometimes it only gets a vigourous rinse, others hot soapy water.
The top gets a bit disgusting - it has a 'sports cap' so he puts his grubby mits on it to open it so I wash the top properly every day.

They come home every day so I rinse them nightly and put them in the dishwasher at the weekend.

Flamesparrow · 07/09/2006 13:35

If its being emptied between times, then I wouldn't be too upset (although the thought of the top of it sounds very manky) - I'd be happier with daily, and I am a slattern.

SherlockLGJ · 07/09/2006 13:36

Everyday.

LadyTophamHatt · 07/09/2006 13:38

every day.

prettybird · 07/09/2006 13:38

Weekly

SKYTVADICT · 07/09/2006 13:38

Supposed to be every day they bring them home - but they get forgotten more often than not.

If yours are putting fresh water in them daily then its not so bad but if the same water stays all week (if they don't drinkg it) then thats not nice and I would prefer to have them home daily to send in fresh

Should be every day - and into the dishwasher (we have at least 2 to rotate).

Even if they are rinsed out, the top bit will have germs and bacteria from the child's mouth, and this will develop throughout the week.

Wasn't there some research on this somewhere (pointed out on MN) which showed that a sports bottle lid had more bacteria on it by the end of the week than a toilet seat??

Bleurgh!

daily - to anything else

MrsSpoon · 07/09/2006 13:48

We get the bottle home every day and wash it every day. In fact in P1 they were issued with a bottle and an information sheet saying the bottle was to be washed in hot soapy water every day and left to air dry.

MrsSpoon · 07/09/2006 13:48

I of course put it in the dishwasher and it melted.

Twiglett · 07/09/2006 13:52

every day too ...

alison222 · 07/09/2006 13:56

Every day - they send them home. That way they have fresh water each day too.
2 or 3 day old water tastes Yuk

Blu · 07/09/2006 14:00

Legacy - unfortunately we have no diswasher so DS's bottle is obviously a health hazard....

zdl - I think it's official now, you are a slattern

Or just have a laid-back attitude - and MartianBishop will be along in a minute and tell us that germs are nothing to worry about.

donnie · 07/09/2006 14:04

every day!

prettybird · 07/09/2006 14:11

We only get the home weekly. They do have access to cold water to fill them up at school.

kimi · 07/09/2006 14:19

get it back every night and wash it everynight,

Crackle · 07/09/2006 14:50

Good Lord. Daily washing and then I quarter-fill and put them in the freezer. I top them up in the morning. Icy cold water is lovely compared to tepid tap water.

The thought of tepid week-old water makes me want to yak.
