Do children go on more school trips than they used to?

My son has missed nearly all his instrument lessons this term because of school trips. Are there more than there used to be?

Tis annoying.

Depends entirely on the school. Weekly trips is fairly unusual in most state schools. We have one a term (3 per year) and that seems fairly typical in our primary-South East.

While I agree with theenchantedforest, as the dcs have about a trip each a term, that's still lots more than I had in the 1970s. But they do go on 3 week long residentials, in years 4, 5 and 6, we didn't go on any.

Depends on school, think my DS only had one per year - plus a local 'walk' or something in school time.

normally only 1 a year here I think, that and a short walk to the local library in most years.

right. maybe it's my kids' school then.
Time to get out-of-school instrument lessons, methinks.....

They have more of everything, except desk time it seems.

Am reeling from yet another bloody fancy dress day today, announced last Thursday so 'we had the weekend to plan'. Apparently it was intended to be short notice so there was less time for online shopping and the 'children' would have to be creative. No we were at a wedding 250 miles away the whole weekend, cue sobs from DC2 this morning.

Same day I find DC1s higher level lessons for the top group were cancelled a couple of months ago because the teacher was too busy. Well yes I'm too busy to be crafting endless flaming costumes (not criticising the individual teacher, am sure many teachers find alot of these things a distraction too!)

Urm as you were, seem to have found an outlet for my frustration.

DD has had 2 'big' trips in Reception, but I've also walked with them to church 3 times, a different church once, the theatre once, a care home once, the playing field (not on site) once, a local supermarket once, and then I'm walking with them later this week to a different playing field. so yes, quite a few off-site activities!

I don't think so. Though perhaps they make more fuss about anything about going off the school grounds so it can seem more.
If the school is taking my yr 5 for a walk down the road we can end up with a permission slip to fill in including medical details and whatever. However when I was at school, sometimes the teacher would have an idea as to something local we might like to see and we'd just get up from the desk and go.

Mine have one main one per school year, with occasional little extra ones, and a big extra one in year 2 and 6.
We always had one main one in each year, year 6 also had an extra one, and several small trips to things like theatres each year except year R.

But there are many more people that come into the schools and do things that we would have gone out to do. I only once remember an outside agency coming into do something at primary.

We didn't have non-uniform days until secondary.
