What does your 6 yo DD play with?

Apols for posting in education, but I couldn't seem to find an appropriate place elsewhere.....

DD is 6 and tells me all the toys we have are too babyish. This is true - she has two younger siblings. We don't watch any TV channels with adverts so are in the dark about the latest toys, or what is out there for a 6yo. What do yours play with?

Loom bands are the current craze in school

Bunnyjo · 22/06/2014 13:16

What mrz said, you won't go wrong with loom bands!

DD is 6yo and she's mainly playing with her outdoor toys at the moment - so trampoline, skipping rope, roller blades etc. In the home she likes doing loom bands, reading and playing with other crafty things like Hama Beads (although she much prefers loom bands). She also enjoys playing games on the tablet.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 22/06/2014 13:23

Dd does lots of drawing, painting and we do craft things together, she has lots of craft kits for birthdays and Christmas and we slowly do them, at the moment she is making a shoulder bag from a galt craft kit with lots of help. And she plays making dens with boxes, sheets, chairs and takes her cuddly toys on lots of imaginary adventures. She likes to help me cooking a lot and loves food shopping and helps plan meals. Tbh she doesn't play with toys much. We play snap and fish , and board games sometimes, ludo is a favourite. She scooters round the garden lots. And swimming is her favourite thing at the moment. She likes loom bands too.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 22/06/2014 13:25

She does love the tablet too, she plays on minecraft a lot, and plants vs zombies.

MrsBungle · 22/06/2014 13:26

My dd is 5. She loves doing loom bands and other crafty stuff like sequin art.

She also loves to write in her "secret diary".

She loves her bike and her scooter and the trampoline.

She also likes dressing up clothes and Lego.

Xihha · 22/06/2014 13:44

DD is 5.8, she's obsessed with loom bands too and anything crafty.
The only actual toys tend to be dinosaurs or board games atm

Xcountry · 22/06/2014 13:55

Her pony, her friends, her bike, her scooter etc. I don't allow her to play in the house during the day, all the kids are kicked out to go play with their friends. This morning seems to ba all about water pistols for every kid on the street, not just DD.

BrieAndChilli · 22/06/2014 14:03

Dd loves anything crafty, her favourite gift last year was a massive cardboard box with some felt tips!! Loom bands are the current craze
She plays with lego friends, squinkies, doctor stuff, dolls, build a bear, barbies, stuffed toys etc plus garden toys
But mainly it is craft - sticking, cutting, glitter, drawing, letters, journals, etc etc

nonicknameseemsavailable · 22/06/2014 14:42

I have a 5 year old and one who will be 7 in september.

they like hulahooping and skipping, lots of dens and imaginary stuff, playing vets is a big favourite.

loom bands are a new discovery.

both do a lot of drawing and writing.

the elder one likes barbies and my little ponies, the younger one prefers her soft toys, she doesn't really like plastic stuff. both like lego, wooden building bricks and games such as pass the bomb junior. gone off jigsaws a bit but they do like them if there is one out.

hels71 · 22/06/2014 15:28

DD is 6, will be 7 in September. She likes Hama beads, lego friends, polly pockets, any dolls.....making things and writing and drawing. She also loves dressing up.

noramum · 22/06/2014 15:44

DD will be 7 soon and loves lego Friends. She still plays a bit with her barbies, that is on and off. Same with her teddies.

She loves .sticker books, arts and craft, books, board games, plays on the ipad a bit, loves outdoor toys like swing, climbing frame or trampoline.

casthom · 22/06/2014 20:12

My DD turns seven next month. She absolutely loves Playmobil and plays with it for hours! She also likes Polly Pocket, Barbies and Lego Friends.

SummerSazz · 22/06/2014 20:16

Ponies (sadly for her not one of her own), trampoline, bike, tents, hose pipe Hmm loom bands, Hama beads, craft, reading, Lego, Uno, her sister!
But, she has never been a 'toy' player or into dolls.

NumptyNu · 22/06/2014 22:09

Thanks all. I had noticed the looms, but couldn't quite believe that they were up to much!

Loom bands
Lego
Build a bears
Anything Frozen related
Scooter
Games on the computer
Board games
Craft stuff

MrsWinnibago · 22/06/2014 22:19

Mine plays with sticks.
,
Hmm

She's a climber...she goes outside, makes pictures with stones, climbs trees, waters "her garden" and generally makes mischief

She NEVER plays with toys unless it';s a jigsaw or her walkie talkies.

rhetorician · 22/06/2014 22:24

MrsWinnebago, mine is 5 and a half, also likes sticks, bugs, slugs, snails, anything messy. A real outside girl. Likes bike, scooter, trampoline. Not keen on board games or puzzles really. Playing with her sister, putting on "shows". Likes Lego, zoobs, making dens.

MrsWinnibago · 23/06/2014 09:03

Rhetorician Snap! Mine loves slugs and snails and picks them up! Blech!

She also loves her scooter...wish you were our neighbour!

Xihha · 23/06/2014 10:25

MrsWinnibago and rhetorician your DD's sound awesome, my DD is fascinated by bugs, slugs and worms as well as frogs and newts Grin its far more fun than princesses and barbie.

rhetorician · 23/06/2014 10:44

her latest "find" is woodlice with little baby woodlice attached to them Shock -She knows heaps about all of this stuff though, and is learning all sorts of useless information things about what they eat and how to treat them. MrsWinnebago - sounds like they'd have a ball together. It's a bit tricky because DD knows that she is 'supposed' to play with girls, but doesn't much like the games they play.

One of the mums at school was like this as a child - is now scientist working on ant colonies, or summat. But DD wants to be a park ranger when she grows up.

MrsWinnibago · 23/06/2014 10:58

Rherorician DD would love that...I must advise her to check under the wood pile. Grin

Unfortunately I put some slug pellets down the other day and she found a graveyard of dead ones the next day and was almost weeping over them "Oh poor sluggies! Oh dear...oh dear...." Sad

I'm looking for something less violent to protect my plants now.

fuzzpig · 23/06/2014 11:18

My DD will be 7 tomorrow, and particularly plays with:

Lego. She is getting yet another set tomorrow in fact.
Dressing up stuff
Musical instruments, messing about on the piano, she did recorder club last year
Scooter/bike (ok not toys really) - getting rollerblades tomorrow but not sure how she will take to them
Frisbee/ball etc
Dolls - she got a lalaloopsy last year and this year a monster high doll
Hama beads
Polydron
Numicon
Happyland (for much younger children really but she and her younger brother still play with it loads)
Playmobil
Wooden train set
Board games - favourite currently is called QBitz, she loves top trumps
Crafty stuff and endless reams of paper

Have to say that mostly they just run around playing imaginative games though, with the occasional prop or costume addition!

RueDeWakening · 23/06/2014 11:37

DD turned 7 last month, she plays with:

Loom bands (they will drive you demented though!)
Hama beads
Lego (all sorts, not just Lego friends which is a bit pink for her taste)
Puzzle books
Pattern type colouring books
Polly pocket
Beany baby type things (she's bought her own with pocket money no less)
Bike
Skipping rope
Scooter
Swingball
Trampoline
Paddling pool/watering can/hose pipe/sprinkler
Computer/iphone games

NumptyNu · 25/06/2014 21:47

Where's the best place to get a starter kit for the loom bands? What should I expect to pay for a decent one?

NumptyNu · 25/06/2014 21:48

Glad you said that last bit fuzzpig. Mine spend 80% of their time doing the same....
