3 year olds - Ante pre-school year
4 year olds - pre-school year
5 year olds - Primary 1

Education is not compulsory until a child is 5. If the child is born Sep-Feb, parents can choose to defer to the next year. This is normal for Jan/Feb born children.

" Ante pre-school year"

Boy that is complex.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 12:06

Generally age 3 and 4 are referred to being 'at nursery'.

Xihha · 20/06/2014 13:58

Just out of interest does anyone really say EYFS? or do most people call it reception? DD's at pre-prep so they don't say either at her school but EYFS is one of those terms I've only seen on mn.

Also, in Scotland do you start counting again once they start secondary, so our year 7 would be secondary 1?

ClaimedByMe · 20/06/2014 14:03

It's just nursery here until they start p1

PeachandRaspberry · 20/06/2014 14:32

I haven't a clue what EYFS, and I don't think many folk do either!

Nursery
p(rimary) 1-7

S(econdary) 1-6 (mostly called first year, second year, third year)

Wellerum · 20/06/2014 14:36

I'm familiar with EYFS - it's the curriculum/approach for pre schools and reception (and childminders of 3/4 year olds) in England. I thought it was quite a well known term around here!

Some places mix their EYFS, in effect having pre-school and reception together, some places have separate pre-schools and hten reception at school.

littlejohnnydory · 20/06/2014 17:52

EYFS is the curriculum rather than the school year, in England it applies to nursery and reception classes, but childminders also follow the EYFS, I think - but I've heard 4/5 year olds referred to as "reception" or "foundation" interchangeably in England.

In Wales the EYFS covers nursery - year 2 (3-7 year olds).

littlejohnnydory · 20/06/2014 17:54

I'm not sure whether the EYFS exists in Scotland, I suspect it doesn't, as the National Curriculum doesn't. that's perhaps why some posters haven't heard of it.

stargirl1701 · 20/06/2014 18:01

It doesn't. Scotland has had a separate education system since the formation of the UK. We use something called a 'Curriculum for Excellence'. We don't have OFSTED - HMIe inspect schools. We don't have SATs - no national formal testing of children until 16 years old.

It is quite different. No Gove. Grin

mrz · 20/06/2014 18:05

EYFS is from birth to age 5 and is the "school" year

It is the Early Years Foundation Stage (and has it's own curriculum)
just as Y1/2 are Key Stage 1 and Y3/4/5/6 are Key Stage 2 and Y7/8/9 are Key Stage 3 etc

Wales has the Foundation Phase

ophiotaurus · 20/06/2014 20:12

So is reception the equivalent of primary 1?

Watercolourfootballs · 20/06/2014 20:20

I think Reception is the equivalent of the pre-school nursery year as most children in England are 4 in Reception and most kids starting P1 are 5 (or nearly).

ophiotaurus · 20/06/2014 20:30

Thanks Watercolour :)

mrz · 20/06/2014 20:30

Most children in reception aren't 4 but there will be some who are just 4 when they start and others who are nearly 6 when they leave ...

SomeSunnySunday · 20/06/2014 20:37

The school intakes are different (March-Feb in Scotland, so children start P1 aged between 4.6 and 5.6, and pre-school nursery (if they opt to go), which is just half days, aged between 3.6 and 4.6); I don't think that you can say that either preschool or P1 is the reception "equivalent" - they are just different systems. Academically it's probably a mix of the two.

Rockdoctor · 20/06/2014 20:40

We have been contemplating a move to Scotland and as I understand it DD who is currently in Reception in England would have to go back into nursery under the Scottish system - as stargirl says it is completely different. The cut-off dates vary, but for my DCs, P1 is the equivalent of Year 1 and Reception is done within the nursery system.

Cirsium · 20/06/2014 20:49

In the areas I have worked as a nanny preschoolers usually attend nursery in the morning and ante-preschoolers in the afternoons, so are referred to as morning or afternoon nursery children.
