How much help can teachers give children in the Y1 Phonics Test?

DC had phonics test today.

They think they go to play a game so I asked him how the game went and asked him if the words were hard or easy.

He said. "Some were hard. I had to sound them out but I got there in the end"

This gave me the impression that someone had prompted him to sound them out and the phrase "got there in the end" isn't something he would use so it sounds as though the teacher got him to sound them out and then when he had done it correctly marked it.

Of course I might have it all wrong but what level of help are teachers able to give?

Do you have any idea when we, the parents will find out our DC's result?

IsItFridayYetPlease · 18/06/2014 23:08

We send ours with the school reports in July, just like the EYFS and Year 2 results.

What happens if a child is off sick? Can they do it next week or will they just miss it altogether? (DS will have missed the test this week).

MrsKCastle · 19/06/2014 16:52

They can do it next week, Lucas.

I think everyone who's in school must complete it this week, but there's an extra week given to cover illness.

We got a letter with our child's result the same day as they did the check, but saying that the pass mark will be released later

mrz · 19/06/2014 19:08

So how can they give you the results Debbie?

Hulababy · 19/06/2014 19:12

My y2s did theirs today. 4 have got 36+, one got 40. Borderline child got 31 so unlikely to have hit the threshold, and the child we didn't think would reach the threshold got 30 - better than we expected actually, but won't have hit threshold.

No surprises again. There were non in the other 2 y2 classes either.

DebbieFiderer · 19/06/2014 19:13

We got told their score but that we would be told the pass mark when it is released. Seems a bit wrong as if DD had got a borderline (mid thirties) score I would be worrying.

mrz · 19/06/2014 19:44

seems a strange way to do things when they will know the pass mark on the 30th

FatalCabbage · 19/06/2014 19:58

DS said there was an alien word not marked with an alien on his. When he told me the word I thought Hmm because although it's real and decodable it isn't exactly a 5/6yo's vocabulary.

But hey ho. I am in awe of any teacher managing to go through 30 of these.

DebbieFiderer · 19/06/2014 20:00

mrz, I absolutely agree. But this school serms to do a lot of things strangely!

My DS Y2 failed last year so he will be taking it again. Does daily phonics teaching carry on in Y3?

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 20/06/2014 08:26

Hulababy, do they do it again in Y2 then?

LucasNorthCanSpookMeAnytime · 20/06/2014 08:31

Actually, ignore my last question, I've just Googled about Y2s taking the test.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 20/06/2014 10:00

DD1 said it went ok, I however will be impressed if she has passed it. I am hoping in some ways she has failed as I know perfectly well she has problems even though she can read well and have been trying to get someone to notice. Having seen her trying to read the ingredients on a bottle of sauce last night at dinner and her numerous (I mean well over 20) attempts at reading 'starch' then she SHOULDN'T have passed the phonics test IMO. Part of it is her language disorder but I am still adamant she is a compensating dyslexic. Perhaps if she fails then the school might look at it more?

zingally · 21/06/2014 12:10

My Year One's did the test of Wednesday. I did a script much like the one mentioned above.
86% passed, which I'm pleased about. Up from the 82% I got last year (different school though, and a much bigger class this year).

Feenie · 21/06/2014 12:28

Year Ones

Sorry, felt the need. Smile

Zingally, how can you possibly know that 86% met the standards of the check when no one knows what the standard is yet? Confused

pea84 · 21/06/2014 13:49

I am also keen to know how you can work out your % when we don't know what the pass mark is yet.

IsItFridayYetPlease · 21/06/2014 17:42

We don't find out the official "pass" mark for a week, so what score are you taking as a pass zingally? If you are assuming 32 you may be disappointed!
