Let me google that for you....

Pooka · 13/06/2014 19:04

No idea. Depends on year group. If year 2 then above expectations. If year 6 then below.

BobTheFly · 13/06/2014 19:05

A 4c is above a 3a,b or c. Is it average? Well that would depend on the age of your child.

MirandaWest · 13/06/2014 19:06

It depends what year your DC is in.

MirandaWest · 13/06/2014 19:07

Also assuming he isn't in reception then he will probably have been given levels for his work before - how have they changed from previous years?

MrsStark1 · 13/06/2014 19:14

Ooooops so sorry forgot to put he is in year 3 silly me

If your son is in year 3 you will have had his key stage 1 levels last year and I imagine realise that 4c is above average.

I dont know what his levels were last year as i cannot find his report and cant remember them. They have never really been explained to me. Its only usually a quick 5 mins at parents evening.

I am not sure what a stealth boast is? But at the last parents evening it was mainly about his behaviour as he was having difficulty finishing work and could not focus as well as being silly. Work wise all she said was that he was doing ok work but needed to concentrate and actually finish his work.

I just wondered if he was doing ok as i dont understand the levels and i dont do the school run due to working so not always easy to catch the teacher apart from parents evening so i thought i would ask here. My youngest is behind the rest of the class at the moment so i wanted to make sure my son is doing ok and doesnt need any extra support.

Mrs Stark:

Go to Mumsnet Education pages - select LEARNING & RESOURCES (2nd Column from left) - select Assessment: What? When? How? Why? toward bottom of page and look through progress through NC Levels: www.mumsnet.com/learning/assessment/progress-through-national-curriculum-levels

the tables at the bottom tell you notionally how many sub-levels progress per year and where your child should be at the end of a given year.

For Y3 - MN predicts a child typical will finish Year 3 on NC L2A/ 3C - thus the impression that your post was something of a boast Mrs Stark.

Just as a general note folks: If a teacher tells you anything - your child is on 'Kumqat' for maths and 'Passion Fruit' for Reading - you are entirely within your rights to ask:

what does that mean?

how does that compare to other children nationally at this stage?
(really can't ask in terms of the class - as that is unfair to other children - but generally should be clear on whether your child is ahead/ at/ below expected level of progress by this point in time).

HTH

Great thank you so much for your help.

Apologies if anyone thought i was boasting i genuinely had no understanding of the levels and was just an worried mum wanting to make sure he was not having difficulty like my youngest is as the moment.

For a child in Yr3 NARE (national age related expectations is 2a/3c so anything above this is above average. NARE for Yr4 is 3b.
