Ideas for a year 4 'holiday' topic? All suggestions welcome!

I'm really not being lazy here, so hopefully people won't think that. I've been on long term sick (maternity related) and I'm not feeling very confident about going back to work. I want a really fun topic for the children for their last few weeks and this is my first year in year 4.

I want to to a carousel of activities type ing where the children select the things they are interested in relating to holidays, either a country they are visiting or a place they would love to visit.

Ideas:
A poster advertising the place as a tourist destination
Collage of the flag
Fabulous facts about the country
Model of a landmark from the place
Write a speech convincing people to visit the country
Create a tourist guide of useful information

I'm lost now- I need some more fun and paired or small group activities. I don't want it to be all literacy focused.

All suggestions are welcome!

For something maths-related:

Give them a mock budget and a list of destinations with the cost of hotels in each and flights to each. You can make this as elaborate or simple as you wish - so have a budget airline for cheapie flights vs a normal airline, moltiple grades of accommodation and so on. Then a list of activities they can do whilst there - day trip to see the ruins, waterskiing, scuba diving lessons, wildlife tour and so on. Challenge them to plan their own holiday with as little money left over as possible. (For the purpose of this exercise, all meals can be included and all ice cream is free Smile)

Or have them set up a mock travel agents and take turns being clients, again using a set price list, so that they can work out the perfect holiday for their 'clients'.

For science, you can look into tropical diseases and how to avoid them.

Oh pointy I like that idea!

Thanks

I was going to suggest something money related - perhaps looking at different types of currency in other countries,
coin rubbings,
using pretend euros to do the type of maths questions they would normally do with sterling,
Maybe too difficult (as I still have difficulties and I have A level maths) but looking at basic exchange rates.
How about food from different countries?
Songs/music/dances,
A bit of French/Spanish language perhaps

The wildlife in that country. My y3 so is fascinated by bugs, scorpions, lizards, bats...

dottytablecloth:

Make kites (our school did this - asking parents to send in old scarves) - really successful day and most of the kites did actually fly!

Look up a local nursery rhyme and try to sing it? (group activity)
Look up flight timetables and figure out how long it takes to get there/the time difference?
Draw the contents of their suitcase for that holiday?

something engineeringy - could look at if there are any famous inventions from the country.

modes of transport within countries might interest some as well - camels, rickshaws, boats, bikes and so on

Create a survey to collect

Is there anything in this RNLI Beach Safety leaflet you could use?

It's quite long, but you could use selected pages - for the children to read and then discuss (or make a safety poster).

You might find that there's quite a difference between families in what kinds of holiday destinations are possible, but a trip to a beach would cover most if not necessarily all families.

What lives in rock pools might fit with that (reading and science).

...data about where people have been on holiday, complete the survey around school and then make graphs etc to show results

Cross curricular, taste foods, follow recipes from different counties, read stories based in other countries, dress up, listen to music, explore religion and local cultures.

Sun safety, how to keep safe in the sun.

A luggage allowance game where children pack items into a suitcase and try to get it as close as possible to a stated permissible maximum. You could get them to weigh the suitcase itself at the start and give them one item that weighs a known amount - say a kilo - that they can compare other items to.....

Choosing a destination for say, two weeks' time based on climate data and forecasts from different sources, and then comparing the actual weather in that place for those days

make/cook/try dishes from the different countries.kids enjoy trying different foods & even more so if they helped prepare & cook it!

Also dressing up is always fun!
