G and T register. Any teachers thoughts?

At our school if your child is assessed as in the top 10% at the end of reception they are placed on the G and T register. They then stay on it throughout the whole of primary. This also means noone else can then join the register? Is this the norm? I ask as I have one 'older child in the year ' dd who was placed on it and who is clearly not now far above her peers and one child 'young in the year' who is above her peers now, well above but wasn't at reception and so will never get any of the enrichment opportunities? surely this can't be right? Surely they should move on and off accordingly? Any teachers thoughts?

Top 10% in our school too. Makes a mockery of everything. They get pushed because they hit the G&T stats, the HA who are not G&T don't. Let alone the poor UC. They are just left to simmer, unless they are also SAplus.

Load of bollox. My kids are core, no extras, no added bonus on SIMs. We all know what happens to them.

Agree with Snow. G&T do exist but very rare one in several hundreds if not thousands or more. True G&T require specialist support/program/funding etc. It shouldn't even be a norm in every school and every year. Someone who is very able in something or an early boomer that is not the same as G&T. But the label has become just another layer for setting and streaming kids. HmmConfused (Sigh!)

OP, they move on and off at our school.

I do wish schools, but more particularly parents, would use 'able' rather than 'gifted' for the top 10%. Our school uses 'able', in all verbal communication.

'Gifted' is very rare, I agree.
