Volunteering in Juniors

My youngest is in Y2. I've been volunteering once a week in his year group since YR.

My older dc went to split Infants and Juniors, and AFAIK there were no parent helpers in Junior School, besides which, I always had one in Infant School, so I helped there. Youngest goes to a Primary.

I'm not sure what to next year. Do I offer to continue helping in Y3?

Oh yes, please do. Help with reading, art, maths games, displays, outdoor activities, or anything really. Many parents happily volunteer in Infants but are intimidated by Juniors so you should be valued.

I 'do' spelling in my dds year 5/6 class. I go through their work and identify misspelled words and then every week either test the child and give them new words or do a look cover say write check with them.

I listen to juniors read.
Often they are no longer listened to at home, but really do need the practice of following punctuation, reading with expression, sounding harder words etc.

I listen to year 4s read and there are plenty of children in juniors who struggle with reading. Often EAL children need help with their reading especially if they have only just come to the country.

I listen to yrs 4&6 read, go on trips and help in art lessons

I also go some maths work with the higher ability groups in the 2 year groups which I love!

Our junior school gets lots of volunteers for a week here or there and have lots if student teachers but I really feel appreciated as a regular volunteer

At our school though I'm not allowed to volunteer with my own children's year groups so think about whether you would be willing to volunteer in a different class

I would guess you would be welcomed with open arms! The DC's junior school asks for help with reading, but they get very few offers of help because parents are nearly all either working or looking after younger children.
