We are moving to Devon in September and up until now we have lived in some lovely areas like Stamford and Bath, where is there near Plymouth/Exeter that is similar please? Thanks for your help...

Topsham is a favourite for everyone, especially mummies! Although nice houses don't come on the market that often and can be expensive. Very close to exeter, only 5/10 minutes on the train, everything is in walking distance and they have a lovely primary school, library and play groups.

Sidmouth is also nice, a little further out though. I'd say maybe 45 minutes from Exeter, but its got a gorgeous beach and great town. The primary school is nice but I've not heard great things about the secondary school.

Tavistock or Ashburton are worth a look; cheaper than seaside places and both have lots to offer.

Yes agreed Sidmouth is very pretty but also has a very old population too. What about Exeter itself if you are used to somewhere as big as Bath? It's a nice city and has some very appealing outskirts.

Think about St Leonards in Exeter - lovely neighbourhoods with close proximity to the centre. Tavistock is also a lovely place, although no train link. It really depends, though - do you need to be close to Exeter, or close to Plymouth, or between the two? If it's Exeter you need to be close to, don't discount some of the lovely East Devon and Mid Devon villages that are reasonably easy commutes to Exeter. There are a string of villages between Honiton and Cullompton that are gorgeous (Kentisbeare, Broadhembury, Plymtree, for example) and there are some lovely places between Tiverton and Exmoor (Bolham, Huntsham, Bampton).

Plympton is lovely, 15 mins drive from the city centre, the moors and the beach. Lovely local schools (I work in one), nice quiet village feel to the centre (one road of shops really), free car parking by the shops

Newton Abbot, Teignbridge, and South Hams (Totnes, Dartington) are all good, and have some above-average schools, primary and secondary.

These days, with Street View you can 'visit' all of these places.

Newton Abbot is mid way between Torbay on the coast, and Dartmoor; a new 'link road' is under construction (that had been promised for fifty years!), but it can get congested with summer visitors!

A friend speaks very highly of Ashburton. Good schools and a great place to live.

There are nicer places than Newton Armpit.

Ferguson · 20/06/2014 21:56

True! I didn't mean in the middle of town, but a few miles radius there of can be OK I would have thought.

Asleeponasunbeam · 22/06/2014 08:54

Newton Abbot is not much like Stamford!

I'm from Stamford and am now in Devon. You might like Totnes. It's a marmite place though, for certain! Exeter is similar to Bath in size I suppose and is very pleasant.

Ashburton is small and picturesque. Ivybridge not so pretty but good transport links. Are you thinking about schools?

KEGirlOnFire · 23/06/2014 12:05

I live in Newton Abbot and nearly all the schools are Good or Outstanding around me. Loads of small village schools (DD is in one where there are only 15 in Reception) or slightly bigger town schools with 2 x Reception classes. Easy access for Totnes, Ashburton, Torbay, Dartmoor, Exeter and Plymouth.
