My daughters been at private day nursery from 18months -now 4.5

shes done 1full day 8-6 51weeks a year

shes been there best part 3years

shes been happy there and adores the staff.

shes 5 in sept.

The nursery was rated oftsed outstanding oct just gone

to save bit money we gave notice as rest of her group be finishing next month anyway.

I had meeting with both managers yesterday they had no concerns and wondered which school send paper work onto.

I cant remember the sub headings but everything other than confidence was scored and ticked the 40-60months box.

They said this is good where she needs too be in fact slightly ahead.

as shes older in year i dident doubt this.

Today i handed her preschool nursery folders and talked about outcome of the meeting.

we have split her funding between both settings.

but shes done 2full academic years of preschool+nursery.

but we have done different preschools so preschool 1-year 1 she did 1.5 days.

she started in current preschool last sept.

she started just 1day week term only

they then offered her 2days after feb.

of course 1st term took her while to settle but since xmas shes seemed lot more confident and happy.

They were shocked and disbelived that nursery would score her so highly.

they said shes secure 30-50months and working towards some things in 40-60 but 40-60 now would make her where she needs to be at the end of reception year and be very advanced be that level now?

who d i trust is it common for nurseries and preschools vary scores
? or get it totally wrong either inflated or not high enough.

do i ring nursery next week ask for photocopy show preschool?

basically whatever school she eventually gets 2different scores will o to her new teacher.

I would like accurate score and what areas we need to work on.

Although shes been ok at preschool shes never been as settled at either the same was as nursery but nursery more expensive hence split and widened her social circle.

Honestly, I just wouldn't worry. Whatever assessments are made are for the setting to show progress and not for you to get worried about.

Sometimes it takes a while to see a true picture of a child's capabilities, so that could be partly why she doesn't appear to be making as much progress as she was. Really, though, as long as the staff are planning activities for her which will help her to develop and learn, it doesn't matter. When she starts Reception, it will take a while again to see where she is at - the transition can make a big difference.

Just remember that all the scores and all the statistics are to judge the staff's performance, not to judge your child.

And as for knowing what areas to work on, I'd say work on being playful, imaginative and loving. Those are the things that will help.

TAMumof3 · 06/06/2014 22:02

Agree with level3 poster.

If your still concerned then you can of course assess her yourself.
EYFS criteria are available on gov. website.

It would be unusual for a child to meet all of the 40-60 areas at exceeds level (bear in mind that each catagory has three level - working towards, at, and exceeds) a child could easily be recorded as 30-50 months exceeding, 40-60 months working towards, as the difference is so slight.

School will assess her themself, within two weeks or so of starting, irrespective of any prior reports as children have a host of backgrounds, including no formal nursery attendnace and may will arrive at school without any kind of paper-work trail.

School will rapidly determine her reading writing maths and general knowledge levels.

So she's off to a school Reception class in September?

Don't worry about the paperwork. Her new teacher will look over the records sent up but will use them as supporting his or her own judgements. They will not be relied upon as the only form of evidence of progression and development. Putting it bluntly, the Reception teacher will focus on getting to know your dd and settling her into school life. Then she will make her own assessments based on her own judgements.

Focus on enjoying school, sharing books together, singing sings and rhymes, talking about your day etc. I've been in primary education for over 20 years, your dd sounds like she is doing great. Enjoy the summer.

Thanks for replies i think preschool thourght I was some mad parent making this up this is what nursery told me.

She suppost to be off for reception in sept.

but we didet get any of our 3choices.

so we wait list, defered util jan term after 5th birthday and home educating until then which is why wanted accurate report of her weak points so we can work on them.

socially can take a while unlike most kids but when shes settled shes very confident child.

preschool are already making cutting remarks that they feel she should be in reception in sept thats whats right for her she needs it, its not for my lack of flipping trying she has younger brother who desperatly needs to be in preschool and older sister who starts year 4 i cant do 3school pickups.

Nursery made me feel slighlty better i guess thinking well shes well on course so one term out wont be end of world we plan to follow efys curriculum have lots phonics books, early readers, basic maths .

I know a place will come up im not prepared to dump her in just any school.

whenever she starts she will be assesed but wouldent say shes behind right now she seems ahead compared to when eldest started school at 4.5 as she can write and do basic sounds.

I have noticed new preschool seem be lot more structured and little pushier than last preschool by doing phonics and writing and wondering if their standards are just very high?

Op, a place might or might not come up, and you can start at one school whilst staying on the waiting list for others.

I realise that doesn't solve the transport.

3asAbird · 07/06/2014 13:41

thanks we were offered rubbish schol distanc away not one eldest goes too one one 5mins from house. if we accepted rubbish schl r fund anther school then would lose 1 off waitlist we want t remain waitlist for all 3chosen schools can only bnk 3schools at one time so would have to drop one which dont want to do so council backed me into corner on this one and really only want one of 3 we put down.

You can stay on the waiting list for as many schools as you want even if you accept the offered school

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 07/06/2014 15:00

I don't get that?

You are currently on the wait list for 3 schools. If you'd accepted the rubbish school then you'd still be on the wait list for 3 schools, wouldn't you?

3asAbird · 08/06/2014 07:48

no if i accept rubbish school then i have drop one ff waitlist and waitlist 2 schools.each lea must have different rules and logistics doing 3schools near impossible.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 08/06/2014 11:14

That's really strange, I haven't heard if that before.

TeenAndTween · 08/06/2014 11:45

OP - suggest you contact Admission or prh47bridge or tiggytape re waiting lists, they are the resident admission experts (or start new thread).
I don't think LAs are allowed to limit the number of waiting lists you can be on.

Have a look at the eyfs reports and make your own mind up what you need to work on. Main thing for delaying start to reception would be to start phonics work I would think. They will learn a new sound a day in many reception classes. Make sure you use sounds not letter names. Learn how to write the letters too.

mrz · 08/06/2014 11:52

The primae areas of learning are Speaking & Listening , Physical development and Personal Social Dev.

fledermaus · 08/06/2014 12:10

EYFS scoring will vary between settings, each setting will have different criteria for scoring eg. one might say a child can do something if they have seen it once, another might want to see that they can do something consistently. Some settings will err on the side of marking down so they can show progress.

Remember as well that the private nursery will mostly we staffed by minimum wage workers with a low general standard of education and qualification. A Reception class teacher will most likely ignore anything from nursery and make their own assessment anyway.

3asAbird · 09/06/2014 12:53

Thanks for input guys inted to do phnics, reading and basic maths and socilaise loads wit lots play and crafts and exercise.

Both my la and neighbouring la said only 3schools o pick one dont want drp 1 i do want.

Otherwise would consider other schools and wait on waitlists for more.

seems wrong when london get choices and i get 3 despite the city being ne of high pressure areas on school places in uk.

I would quite happily wait on 5-6schools waitlist

found out we

no 6 for 1st school
105 for school 2
and no 7 for nearest infants 0.509metres from our house.

not expecting any new news until sept.

But the diffreing opinions of same child in 2settings annoyed me.

both are being negative about me defering and home educating.

will ring nursery get photocopy of scores to show preschool.

just in case preschool think im being a tiger mum and delusional over my childs ability.

hiccupgirl · 09/06/2014 15:24

There's probably not a massive difference between the 2 scores as there is a 10 month overlap in the catergories. Both settings should be able to tell you what areas they feel she needs to develop regardless of where they actually place here on the EYFS scores.

It is unusual for a child to not be going straight into Reception especially as an older one. This is probably why they are struggling a bit. Work on phonics, writing the sounds and basic counting and number skills and she should be fine.
