Experiences of having a newly qualified teacher please?

The playground rumour mill has apparently discovered that DD's P7 (11 years old) teacher is only 21 and in her first year of teaching. I wasn't particularly bothered but quite a few people are. It'll be fine, won't it?

It will be absolutely fine.
I am a TA and have worked with NQTs, one of them also taught DD4 inY1. What I found is what they might lack in experience they certainly make up in energy and enthusiasm. They are new, they want to make their place , it usually means that they are extremely thorough and generous with the time they spend in school preparing lessons and assessing pupils progress.

Upsides- they'll be totally up to speed with the current curriculum, they'll be enthusiastic, they'll not yet be exhausted and cynical about education.

FleurdeHeadLys · 03/06/2014 15:09

Thanks. 21 is ancient to 11 year olds anyway!

DS2 (aged 9) has a fab young teacher this year - she's very enthusiastic and has come up with brilliant topics for the kids to get involved in.

Poledra · 03/06/2014 16:23

DD2 had an NQT for yrs 1 and 2 (well, it was the same teacher, so she wasn't an NQT the second year, but you know what I mean!). She was fabulous, very enthusiastic and the class did well. I'm not influenced at all by the fact she and DD2 adored each other and had a major love-in going on for 2 years Grin

sunsout · 03/06/2014 16:31

As long as she can teach and she cares. Experienced ones can be complacent too.

youmakemydreams · 03/06/2014 16:35

Dd had an nqt in p2 and this year in p6. Both teachers were fabulous and full of enthusiasm.
This years teacher a young male teacher was at their school as a student teacher and be is excellent. Dd is his first pupil with sn and he is a huge support, massively patient and loads of fun.

ChippyMinton · 03/06/2014 16:38

NQTs are closely supervised and have to prove themselves capable. Non-issue IME.

Not a great experience for us.
DD is in year 4 and I have never had to speak to any of her teachers about an issue.
This year I've been averaging once a term, I don't think I have suddenly become " that" parent ( I hope)
It's not been great

marssparklesdownonme · 03/06/2014 16:49

Everyone has to start somewhere and NQTs are constantly monitored. I'm afraid NQTs can go in any class though, so don't assume an older class means cream of the crop . It's 3yrs now for most BA with QTS or 4yrs for 3yr degree then 1 yr PGCE or similar (GTP)

In England some universities offer 3 year BEd courses but many are still 4 years full time study.

DramaQueenofHighCs · 03/06/2014 17:34

Put it this way - one of the teachers at the school where I work was one of the best teachers in the school and got an good/outstanding in her OFSTED in her NQT year! She also became a dep head of department very early on!

Your DD will be fine with an NQT.

Toomanyhouseguests · 03/06/2014 17:41

We've had two years on the trot if first year teachers. They have both been excellent. Well prepared, energetic and enthusiastic.

Fuzzymum1 · 03/06/2014 18:19

We have an NQT at school and she's amazing. SHe's been wih us since january and the kids in her class have made excellent progress. Definitley nothing to worry about.

ChocolateWombat · 03/06/2014 18:39

NQTs can be great. However, Im sure they would all look back and see things they would do differently second time round. Experience is important for improvement and NQTs do lack that, through no fault of their own.
Give me an enthusiastic teacher who has been doing it for 3 or4 years and I'd be thrilled. That would be my ideal. Better a keen, up to date NQT though than a disaffected person just waiting to retire.

bumasbigasthetv · 03/06/2014 18:44

My dc both have NQTs this year. They have been absolutely fantastic, their enthusiasm has been contagious and they have really helped my dc with their learning. They have also set up new clubs for the kids and changed the dynamic of the (albeit small) school

Hoppinggreen · 03/06/2014 18:58

There is another NQT at my children's school in addition to the one I mention above that isn't great and the children really don't like him at all.
He is very " process driven" and has no idea how to relate to actual children

Gubbins · 04/06/2014 13:17

Both of my daughters have had NQTs, one in reception and one in year 4. Both have been fantastic, full of enthusiasm, bright ideas, and both are brilliant teachers. Only slight issue we've had is the yr4 teacher has needed a little bit of encouragement in how far she can stretch the top pupils, but once reassured by parents and senior staff she's done a great job at challenging them.

coppertop · 04/06/2014 13:21

Dd had a fantastic NQT.

The only downside for me was the realisation that I was old enough to be the teacher's mother. It made me feel ancient. Blush

WilsonFrickett · 04/06/2014 13:28

I think for P7 it's worth keeping an eye on things like transition planning, as they've probably not physically done that before. But most NQTs are fantastic, enthusiastic, keen to do well, keen to impress.

FleurdeHeadLys · 04/06/2014 13:37

Presumably she left school after her 5th year (17 going on 18) and did the 4 year course. Or the rumour mill is wrong! Grin

Thanks again Flowers

My DC had an NQt in reception - she was an absolutely brilliant teacher, obviously some will be better than others but the concensus seems to be positive.
