Nice primary in Bexley?

Looking to move to Bexley area (so far looked at new Eltham/ Sidcup/ Bexleyheath). Looking for a happy primary school where the children really enjoy school. Results also matter to us as we'd be aiming for grammar schools for secondary but wouldn't want to tutor them out of school for the bexley tests.

So far we like the look of Dulverton, Days Lane, Crook Log, Danson. Any others we should look at? I love the forest school they have at Crook Log.

Yes I have met the deputy head at their open day but it was the head who really stood out for us. I also know a few parents who were keen on BGS but have now opted for C&S instead. I think regardless of who the head is BGS is a great school as are the other GS in the borough. I do think a change of HT can make a big difference, perhaps I'm one of these unwise parents then.

HeleneCixous · 19/06/2014 12:53

I don't have any qualms and neither do the other 7 families from dd's class who chose BGS. The main thing is that all our children get a school they will be happy in!

chocolatemartiniDH · 19/06/2014 15:34

Can I ask for a reference or link to read regarding Bexley making the standard radial distance (as the crow flies)? I thought that was just BGS, not all the Bexley primaries? If it's the primaries too that certainly is a game-changer.

AllabouttheE · 19/06/2014 17:12

It was in the local paper that they had consulted on it.
The grammars are all academies and changed a few years ago.

I would have thought it would be minuted in council meetings, might come up on a search of their site. Maybe get the head of admission email and ask directly. They have to give long notice periods of change.

Hope the link works. Primary intake 2015/2016, distance to be measured in a straight line.

AllabouttheE · 19/06/2014 17:26

Here you are
Though it doesn't tell you anything other than the consultation is closed and will be published in sept 14.
I don't see why the council wouldn't tell you though ?!?

Oops, sorry works on mine. Does this one work?

What about Christchurch primary on shooters hill? The hill has some great houses with big gardens and you have oxleas woods just over the road? Still very close for the bexley grammars later?

chocolatemartini · 19/06/2014 19:26

Thanks for the links, that's pretty clear. I think when dh phoned he must have got someone who didn't really know...

Shooters Hill is definitely a possibility will look at Christchurch again. I must admit despite being vaguely c of e and having both children baptised, I was put off by the large 'Follow Jesus' on the homepage. Looks a bit more evangelical than I'm comfortable with, but to be fair I didn't get past that so I'd better have a better look!

I did live on shooters hill for about 6 months once, as a lodger in someone's lovely house.

Then you will know that Shooters Hill's main disadvantage is its distance from a station. Christ Church is an excellent school but has clearly gone a bit happy-clappy since I was a pupil there last century! Definitely worth checking out though. The top of the hill puts you comparatively close to BGS as the crow flies, and the 89 is a very good bus service

StairsInTheNight · 20/06/2014 18:19

True it's not really near a station, but the 486 runs direct to north Greenwich from the hill, or you can walk/short bus ride to woolwich station.

Christchurch is a bit happy clappy (keen newish vicar) but it is an outstanding primary, my son goes and it's not too evangelical, honestly!

chocolatemartini · 20/06/2014 19:53

Oh great stars that's good to know. The distance from the station was the reason I didn't stay in shooters hill longer, but I loved it there.

hi mummys,

does anyone here have any little ones at crook log primary school ? my little boy is starting there this September but im a bit unsure about how he will be as he was in the nursery there for the last year but didn't seem to do so well compared to the other kids im hoping going into the actual school he will be better :(

I also wondered if anyone knows where the new reception class building is in the school as no one showed us so i have no idea where i have to take the poor little thing to drop him off on his first day :(

neddy7 · 13/01/2015 13:34

Hi there im currently in welling and looking for schools for my boys year 1 and 4.........any ideas?

chocolatemartini · 05/02/2015 09:10

Anyone still around from this old thread? Update: we have now sold our flat and I've visited nearly all the above mentioned schools. Clear winner for me was Deansfield, also quite liked Dulverton and Old Bexley C of E. Didn't get to see Christchurch or Gordon. Now looking with some dismay at the very small number of houses for sale around Deansfield, we have a year to get in place before DS's primary application. Would love to hear from any parents or teachers (by pm if you prefer) from Deansfield.

helene how is your dd liking BGS?

neddy7 was your application this jan? I visited Danson and quite liked it, a bit nondescript but ok... I've also heard positive things from a parent at Hook lane.

Hi
Has anyone heard about Eastcote Primary ? According to statistical information it looks good and the fast that school is small quite appealing as well. However as there are so many discussions about other schools, but not much about that one is a bit concerning for me.
Thanks

LL0015 · 10/04/2015 17:29

Congrats on the sale chocolate (I've name changed but been gave advice about radial distance changes.

Where are you looking to buy? The house prices have gone even more crazy in the last six months.

Have you looked at Holy Trinity Sidcup? That's CofE. Although they are currently recruiting a head.

ChlorinePerfume · 10/04/2015 19:48

In case anyone from this old conversation still around Burnt Oak are now also offering some 11+ prep since becoming an Academy. Thinking ahead of secondary schools, Chis & Sid is become increasingly popular. Kids as close as just over 4 miles away are 18th on the waiting list... Worth bearing in mind.. Allocation day for primary schools is approaching now, hope those of you waiting will get good news soon.
