what level were they at this point in yr 1?

Is a 2b now on track for L3 for yr2 SATS/levelling?

I can't remember what mine was at but she got 3's in yr2.

2b is where they are expected to be at the end of year 2 and 2 sub levels would be a target, so yes, theoretically, level 3 is achievable for yr2 SAT's if at 2b now.

PatriciaHolm · 28/05/2014 16:45

From a 2B to a 3C is two sublevels increase in a year, which is the expected progress in KS1, so yes it's perfectly doable.

spanieleyes · 28/05/2014 17:16

We aim for good progress over KS1 which will mean a whole level a year, 2 sub levels is satisfactory progress, which apparently isn't good enough Confused

mrz · 28/05/2014 17:33

Expected progress in Y2 is 3 sub levels not 2 (2 sub levels is good progress in KS2) we would aim for more than 1 whole level for good progress in KS1.

herewegoagaintoo · 28/05/2014 18:10

Thanks for all the replies though I'm still a bit confused!
Is the same speed of progress expected through L3 as L2?
I've read on here that L3 is very large, so maybe 2b is not enough to get 3b by the time of the SATS?
Is 3b needed to get a L3 at the end of year 2 or can a child levelled 3c still achieve L3?

mrz · 28/05/2014 18:22

Children are expected to make 2 whole levels progress across each Key Stage - so 2 whole levels in y1+Y2 and 2 whole levels in Y3,4,5 and 6 regardless of the level they start at.

Actually I would argue that Level 2 is larger than Level 3

spanieleyes · 28/05/2014 19:24

My authority records a level 3 given at KS1 as a 3B so we need to be ultra secure that they are a level 3 before we will award that level.

gorionine · 28/05/2014 19:35

My DD in year two did her SATS over a month ago.

spanieleyes · 28/05/2014 19:46

Schools will do the formal "testing" part at any time, some schools do them early, some as late as possible, some whilst the year 6's are doing KS2 SATs, others just before the final date for submitting levels to the local authority!!

AllabouttheE · 28/05/2014 21:12

In reading, is a 2c at the end of y1 likely to progress to a 3c end of y2?
Dd teacher said she wouldn't get a 3 and she didn't sit her on level 3 paper so I'm guessing not ?

Seems a bit off to me. Not that I hold much by levels anyway.

mrz · 28/05/2014 21:16

She doesn't need to sit a level 3 paper to be awarded a level 3

teeththief · 28/05/2014 21:31

Y2 DD has 3's in everything. At the end of y1 she was a 2b in everything. She seems have flown through L3 and definitely took longer to get through the 2b/2a barrier. She has grown up a lot in the last few months so I'm guessing the surge in maturity has helped her achieve the 3's

simpson · 28/05/2014 22:13

DS (now yr4) was a 3(c) in reading, writing & numeracy at the end of yr2.

At the end of yr1 he was a 2(c) in reading & literacy and a 1(a) in numeracy.

simpson · 28/05/2014 22:16

Forgot to say DD (currently yr1) is expected to be a L3 at end of this year in reading & literacy (I guess she already is but what I mean is it will be reported in her end of year report).

But her level for numeracy is lower (2C) and tbh I will be suprised if she is L3 at the end of yr2 as it is just not her thing even though DS made 4 sub levels progress in yr2 he was much more able in numeracy.

alluc · 28/05/2014 22:20

DS got 1a in maths at the end of Y1 ( which I must say I thought was low considering he was in top set) and was told at parents evening in March Y2 that already a 'secure' L3! IMO the Y1 mark was wrong and I did comment at parents eve that he had made exceptional progress to which teacher didn't comment!
Reading went from 2c end Y1 to level 3 in March of Y2 and writing from 1a in Y1 to a 2a in March and may be able to get L3 for end of Y2.

freetrait · 28/05/2014 22:25

Yeah, probably. I wouldn't worry about it though. Levels are going anyway. DS was put at L3 at the last parents evening (March/April I think) certainly in reading and I think in writing and maths too. He can certainly read and write, and is getting better at Maths (needs to learn a few more tables I think!). Think he was high level one/low level 2 at end of Year 1.

simpson · 28/05/2014 22:30

alluc - it was the same for my DS in that I thought his maths level was low at the end of yr1. It is only now DD is in yr1 that I can see the differences in what DS could do & what DD can't (or finds harder but in an age appropriate way iyswim). However her NC Level at the end of yr1 will be higher than DS's!

BaconAndAvocado · 28/05/2014 22:32

mrz do you mean because the teachers can over ride with teacher assessment?

Thank you for all your responses - 2b does sound on track thenSmile

Interesting Mrz, DD 3c maths & 3b reading but was expecting slower progress for yr 2 definately wasn't expecting L4s.

Allabout, I thought all children achieving a 2a in the L2 paper were supposed to sit the L3 paper? If she was 2c at the end of year 1 it sounds like she should have at least made 2 sublevels of progress in yr 2 to a 2a and should therefore have sat the L3 paper?

Freetrait, they're not going for this year's yr 1s yet though are they? In any case DD is at independent school (that follows NC & uses SATS) and according to CT they will have a system in place to show progress to parents come the new school year - so levels albeit by another name.

mrz · 29/05/2014 06:41

No Baconand Advocado I mean that the test results aren't reported only the teacher assessment. Schools can use the tests at any point in the year so if a child achieves 2A in the test it isn't unheard of for them to progress and be a secure level 3 by the time the TA is reported in July.

alluc · 29/05/2014 09:28

Simpson- yes I remember I posted something last summer about DS's Y1 levels and you reassured me. I think they were artificially keeping them low for some reason! It just made me worry all summer holidays tbh!!

spanieleyes · 29/05/2014 10:15

But if they "keep them artificially low" then the teacher will fail his/her performance management and no pay rise! The difficulty is levels being reported artificially high!!

In reality, schools try to ensure levels are as accurate as possible, but levelling isn't an exact science, there is little difference between a 2b and a 2a, progress isn't linear and children will develop at different rates!

simpson · 29/05/2014 10:40

alluc - you have a better memory than me! Blush

Glad things are sorted now though Smile

In the school I am in (not my DC school) levels are capped at a 3B for end of yr2 as a child would not have been taught the material needed to go higher (don't get me started on that one, I am not a teacher btw).

alluc · 29/05/2014 11:27

spanieleyes - I know it doesn't make sense but there is an imminent ofsted coming up and maybe they wanted to show excellent progress in Y2 or something. Going up 4 sublevels in 2 terms seems a big jump to me and I know his Y1 teacher gave him higher levels which were 'moderated' down internally by Y2 teacher.
