My son came back home from a playdate & informed me him and his mate had a good laugh looking at his teachers facebook page (which according to him incl. wedding photos, kissing girls and somewhat privet photos).

My son isnt allowed a facebook page and he informed me it was his friend who just showed him and he said his mum knows so it's ok. I was shocked and i dont think it's right at all to poke his nose into his teachers facebook page, i`m slightly surprised it's exposed so easily but than again i do not know much about social media expect for the fact i have banned it in our house. His teacher is a VERY good teacher and i want my son to repect him. Shall i just ignore this, he says all students do this and it's allowed and harmless but i wonder .... any thoughts ?

Thank you all, i now will certainly let him know and hopefully he will not take offense and if he thinks it's none of my business, well he's right but at least he knows.

Ill also have a word with my son's friend mum as the boys are just 10! and shouldnt be playing around with this (she might not know also). Reading about saving and sending privet photos to Governors, dear me, that's completely wrong and the boys need to know this (just in case).

My son doesn`t have a page but many of his friends do and he's been asking me for ages however this proven again he's far too young and I can see no benefit to it at all. The social pressure is huge to be seen, to be seen being cool, having lots of friends.

No, no, no. Teaching has an element.of secrecy. So do schools

I came across the FB page of one of the teachers at my children's school one day, and it was wide open. I quietly mentioned to the HT that it might be worth reminding the staff, and especially the younger teachers, that they need to lock down their privacy settings (I didn't actually look to see what was on the page as it was none of my business). The HT was very grateful to me for letting her know privately (I didn't approach the teacher as they had never taught my child and I didn't know them at all) and I believe the teacher was too.

I called the school office once when I came across the FB page of a teacher in DS's school. The teacher takes a specialist subject so teaches the whole school but parents don't tend to have any interaction with him IYKWIM.
I may be a prude but he came across as a total pervert which was very disturbing.
Anyway, shortly after, the page went more private and I know the school now has a policy for staff on social media.

Oh the depravity. Please, won't someone think of the children.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 28/05/2014 23:00

I think you did the right thing. We shouldn't always be privet to such information x

MadameDefarge · 28/05/2014 23:19

Someone really needs to talk to them about their fb privacy settings. They are clearly far too strict.

Grin feenie, I think many of us were thinking the same thing.

OP, I agree have a word with the school or teacher directly.

I once was browsing fb to see what the head of ks3 at DS's school looked like, as she was extremely rude to me during a phone call and refused to meet me, so I was very upset. I accidentally friend requested her Shock Blush!! I cancelled it immediately but boy I wished the earth would open up and swallow me quickly. Thankfully I haven't needed to have contact with her since!!

MadameDefarge · 28/05/2014 23:22

As you were, ahem.

ILoveCoreyHaim · 28/05/2014 23:23

For anyone saying they have high privacy and are not searchable I would double check. As far as I know fb removed this option last year. Everyone is searchable but you can block people and secure your wall, photos and recent activity. Ask someone your not friends with to look for you

My thoughts are - Why on earth would you call a friend to tell her she can view this teacher's page ? Hmm

Sounds like muck spreading to me - surely if you were concerned for the teacher, you would just have a quiet word with him or someone on the staff when you go back after half term.

Jellyandjam · 29/05/2014 09:24

ilovecoreyhaim you are right they did remove that feature some time last year. I used to have it and got an email about it changing a while back. When I was teaching I didn't use my real name anyway though.
Also your current profile picture is always public but they have changed that now so that every time you change your profile picture it reverts to public settings, meaning when you change it anyone can still see past ones. However, you can change it back to friends straight away and this prevents that so it can only be seen when used as a current picture and not later. You can check this by going to the view as bit and selecting view as public.
feenie lol!
