Check list for starting primary school

Help me please!!! I need to get together a check list for my DS who is starting primary (reception) school for the first time after half term...
My first meeting / view of the school is on the Tuesday after half term but I'm told he should then be able to start on the Wednesday. What do I need to do / ask about in advance?

The to do list so far ...I've got:

Talk to school about DS's ASD needs
Find out which class will he be in / meet teacher
School uniform - (bought)
Sports kit, plimsolls and bag - (bought)
Name tags/ shoe labels (bought but not sewn on yet)
School shoes (to buy)
School bag (to buy)
Find out start/ finish times
Sign up for school dinners / dinner money
Settling schedule - need to find out policy with regards ASD
Find out where to park/ buses etc
Find out which day he will do PE on
Liaise with nursery school to send over his reports, SALT, SENCO details
Put together a kit of spare clothes in case of accidents?
Find out about any forthcoming school trips
Stationery?

What else????

Little bit of background!: this school place was offered to us after a long wait of 9 weeks (in-year admission following move). We finally got offered a primary school on Friday and we have a meeting with the deputy head on the Tuesday after half term. DS1 has ASD and because of this and the fact we knew we were moving he did not start primary in September but continued at his nursery but with more hours until Easter.

That sounds pretty c

Sorry - comprehensive! My DDs don't need any stationery. But there are things you need to know about book bags (eg what day they bring them home, what day they go back, do you put the dinner money in them or what) and water bottles (my DDs' school gives them a water bottle and they bring it home and refill it every day).

I'm sure they will cover everything like that though and what they miss you will find out soon enough.

Perhaps ask them what you can do or what they will do to help your son settle in as he's joining the class late? Socially and academically. Eg what letters and sounds they've done / how they can help him make friends

Good luck! It's an exciting time.

Hi Sweet has the school got a good website? There's usually loads of info on a good one including start/finish etc, details of trips etc.

I think you've got most of it on the list. Stationary will depend on the school, DD has to have pencils and colouring pencils but most of her friends schools don't let children bring in pencil cases in reception.

Might be worth finding out where things go in the mornings (which is his peg, is there a book bag box, a shelf drinks bottles go on, is there a box for PE kits etc.)

DD's school ask for wellies to be left in school and a painting apron or old shirt for art.

Put socks in the spare clothes, poor DD once weed on her socks and I had only sent in spare knickers and skirt.

Good luck.

YY DSs used to have to keep wellies/cagoule in school for outsidey stuff all year round. And a sun hat/cap in the summer.

Most schools will provide you with a list of equipment you need, so dont stress about that.

If your DS has ASD, i think you should probably focus on that - on meeting the teacher and making sure the school has a good understanding of his needs, as well as finding out what support will be in place for him.

Good luck!

I would ask for a meeting with teacher and SENCO before your child starts so you know they have read all reports and understand his needs.

Do you think your DS will cope with starting school full time. Of you think he will be overwhelmed consider part time until you feel he can cope with longer.
