I have 3 dc at secondary school and 1 at primary. The 3 older ones break up on a Friday and we go on holiday the next day.The littl'un apparently does not finish til the following wednesday.Rather than requesting authorisation what will happen if she just doesn't turn up for those 3 days?

If a child doesn't turn up at our school and we haven't heard why by, say 10.00 we would text the parent asking them to explain why. If they didn't respond to the text we would phone. We have to put a reason in the register.

If you say your DC is ill it will be recorded as ill and forgotten about by the time they go back after 6 weeks Wink

But actually IsItFriday's letter is a far better idea. Only a very hardened stickler of a Head Teacher wouldn't accept that Smile

I haven't read through all of the posts. However, parents need to be aware that if a child doesn't attend and the school doesn't know why, the school must try to make contact with the family. If no contact is made, the school must call the police. I know of one family that eneded up with a broken in door because no contact had been made and the police had to check. Not nice to come home to a boarded up door with a police notice on it!

my neighbour sent that exact same sort of letter after booking a family day trip on polling day last week but discovered that the school was not going to close. HT said she understood it was an honest mistake. no idea how it was marked down but no lies or fuss required.

woops was talking about isitfriday's letter obviously!

As an ex teacher, please let the school know beforehand. That way they can organise things such as contents of tray to take home, pe bag, etc. I had a few children over the years not tell me they were leaving early, and so I had to package up carrier bags of bits, named, to pass up to the next teacher. Was a real nuisance.

I would say they r poorly. Trust me, they are certainly not going to call the police as suggested by another poster. You can say they have chicken pox and will not be in for the rest of the week.

We ALWAYS chase up any 'sickness' reported for the first or last week of tem - so call to home phone number, cross-check with other sources of information etc. I'm afraid it is too obvious a ploy and most schools have had to become cynical about it. The school will almost certainly put 'unauthorised absence' whatever you do, so just be upfront about it with a letter just like isitfriday's.

Just send It'sFriday's letter. It's perfect. Then you can relax and go away wthout worrying
