Does anyone have experience of reading schemes for 'twice exceptional' kids? My DS (9) is gifted but has dyslexia. He is on Oxford reading tree level 9 which according to the website is for ages 5-7. I have been asking school for different books more appropriate for his interest level but they say he must plough thru Oxford tree. He is so bored it is now becoming counterproductive. Any suggestions? Thanks

We already have an EP report with lots of recommendations which the school are following. Trouble is they are a private international school (we live in Asia) although teaching British national curriculum. They don't really have the SEN support/resources you would get in a UK school. They are doing a pretty good job with supporting him in most areas but they seem not to have other possible reading schemes. So I am trying to investigate other options. No doubt I could put pressure on the school to investigate this but sometimes it's just easier to do things yourself. We break up in 3 weeks so I'm hoping to get some books from the UK when I visit in the summer. Thanks for your input everyone. Much appreciated. Smile

Petrasmumma - thx for the offer, but I think a bit complicated as we are out of the country. I appreciate the thought though :-)

If you are after dual banded readers, Collins big cat do a series that might be perfect. Off the top of my head I think they are pearl readers.

Definitely look at Barrington Stoke. Some great authors and 'proper' stories that don't seem like a reading scheme.

I second the suggestion of talisman books, especially if you still want to help him refresh his phonics. I used them for 9/10 yr olds who were bright but for whom English was a second language. They come with a book of worksheets, so you could actually give it to the teacher to do in school as part of his reading.
