Fun maths books for yr - y1

My dd is currently in yr. She's a strong reader and has a good go at simple addition and subtraction up to 20. Are there any good, fun books I could get where she can play around with numbers a bit more? Something to build her confidence and get her practising writing the numbers and symbols at this level. Thanks.

DD2 was given photocopies from Letts Mythical Maths workbooks for ages 5-6: www.collins.co.uk/search?ssv=mythical+maths

Nicely illustrated, lots of fun and interesting games to play with numbers and very visual - so yes writing numbers, but also dealing with counting objects.

Home bargains tend to have some decent Letts ones in for £1-2.

last summer out local 99p store had a lot of letts ones so worth checking there and also Wilkinsons. We have had a variety, both my girls like different styles of pictures/puzzles etc so I think you are best to take her with you and look at a few to see what she likes.

We bought some really fun ones from Tesco, there were sticker rewards at the end of each page completed. Wilkinsons also good, bought a really effective 'telling the time' one from there.

Those all look like the sort of thing I was thinking, thanks. Annoyingly went in wilko and 99p shop yesterday but didn't think to look there. Will have a look next time I'm there.

If you want real 'books' about maths, dd2 thoroughly enjoyed 'Remainder of One' and another one based on Rumpelstiltskin (sorry, can't remember title, but if you look on Amazon under 'maths books' it should come up!). They are more Y1 than YR, though, I would think.

There are others like this - stories about maths, explaining basic maths concepts in visual/word ways.

Try Jonathan Litton's Marvellous Maths it's really interactive. It covers lots of bases, and is a great one to keep on the bookshelf as a handy resource too. It was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards too.
