Would you let your 5yr old DS take a skipping rope to school?

My DS is 5yrs old and in year one. He came home from primary school today and asked if he could take a skipping rope in to play with at playtime/lunchtime.

Apparently the school has an activity cupboard or something and he was playing with one from in there today - on his own.

Girls are allowed to take skips in so I am assuming boys will be too(!) just don't want him to get bullied or anything for it.

What's ur thoughts pls??

I don't see why not; big brawny boxers skip.

Yes I thought that too. Thanks x

Make sure you tell ds that too; I suspect Frank Bruno and Barry McGuigan are too long in the tooth to mention, but maybe Kid Galahad, Amir Khan or Tyson Fury...?

Of course - I too would arm him with the fact that all boxers use skipping as part of their training, in case he mixes with any ignoramouses in the playground, and encourage him to get on with it.

In my dcs' infant school all the children, boys and girls, were taught to skip with ropes as part of PE.

It's a great activity, not girlie at all.

No issues - lots of schools do skipping workshops. Just make sure it's very clearly named :)

When DD took in a French skipping elastic (aged 6) all the boys wanted to play too. I don't think there will be a problem.

Everyone skips out our school, boys and girls. They're having a sponsored skip in a few weeks

Thanks everyone, yes will arm him with some facts first. I bought him some today and he can't wait to take them to school tomorrow! X

Lots of 5 year olds can't skip, so no way will it be seen as girly, the other boys will be in awe.

My DS is year r is cheerfully unaware of gender stereotypes and as well as charging round the playground playing 'Scorpions' with the boys, he also dresses up as a princess from time to time when the dressing up is out and makes "rapunzel hair" from plastic chain toys at school. He has also taken his beloved build-a-bear for show tell who is a 'girl' and wears various sequiny sparkly dresses he's chosen for her! No sign of any bullying at our school. A skipping rope will be fineGrin

We recently had a skipathon (skip to be fit) at our school. Generally speaking, the boys were better than many of the girls. Gender doesn't have much to do with it.
