Has anyone got their DC into school on the second round of allocations?

I'm looking for hope and success stories really. Our DS didn't get into our local catchment school and our only chance of now getting a place is via the waiting lists (we have no grounds to appeal). Has anyone managed to get their DC into school in the second round of allocations or was it only via a call saying you moved up the list later in the process? Also what position on the list was your DC? We were the 3rd child refused a place. Many thanks in advance.

What is this "second round?" It's only something I've ever heard about on here. My understanding is that the lists might alter slightly as people's circumstances change and they therefore might decline an offer made to them, freeing up a place.

DD was 9th place on the first round, by the 2nd round we were 6th place. We then moved slowly down to No.1 by the last week of term only to be bounced back up to No.3 over the Summer. She started her allocated school 4th Sept and we got the call to say she had a place at our preferred school in the last week of September.

There is a lot of movement in our area though and we have 4 very sought after private schools so people tend to keep state places and don't give them up till term starts.

2nd round occurs when the council receive all accepts and rejects from initial offer.

Thank you evisola. I hope your DD is enjoying school. Its nice to hear that the system does work and makes me feel a little better about things.

I think it's a misleading term though, as it might raise expectations in people that there are more places than there are ever likely to be.

I'm so relieved we don't have to go through this again this year! It drove me slightly insane last year.

Last year, DS was 8th on waiting list for our preferred school, 4th after 'second round' and then went up and down between 1st and 5th over the summer. We'd been offered a place at a failing school, so declined that and spent some time over the summer with no school place, before he got a place at a school quite a distance away that we'd been 12th on the waiting list for.

We'd been all round town buying his uniform, book bag etc for the alternate school on 13th Sept (for him to start on 21st), when I got home to receive a phone call from our preferred school to say he had a place! He started on the 22nd Sept. They were staggering children starting each week, so he didn't miss out on the start of term.

It was awful at the time, but its quite like a game of poker - if you can hold your nerve (and find a slightly acceptable back up) then hopefully it'll be ok in the end. Good luck. :)

I have known a lot of people get places "from the waiting list" (much better term, and describes how it is supposed to work). I even know one girls who got her place 5 days into term; after a mother decided to move her son. Another girl was going to go to a private school, Uniform was bought and then got a last minute place at a state school and they took it (forefitting a terms fees).
I assume this is an infants school place, because for year 3 appealing can be worth while.

I think our LEA is just offering places as they come up to. the website says that "round 2" of offers will be May 20th but we have already gone from 16th on the waiting list for our catchment area community school on April 29th, to 8th today. I assume this is because they have offered places to people on the WL from those who declined by 30th April, so I don't know why there is a time line of rounds of offers on the website.
