Hi

The levels follow NC Levels and MN Education has a rough guide to progress through NC Levels here: www.mumsnet.com/learning/assessment/progress-through-national-curriculum-levels - scroll down to table at the bottom.

The only thing I would add (stressing I'm just a parent) is that from about Year 4 - higher achieving pupils may start to dip in to My Maths Level 5 work and from sometime in Year 5/ Year 6 some high achieving students may tackle Level 6 work.

My one piece of advice is don't worry so much about the lessons (although you can do the work through My Library - and we did a bit over each summer between Y4/Y5 and Y5/ Y6 for DD1 who adores maths) - but do take advantage of the games on My Maths. They're great practise and a lot of fun.

ah ok, thank you - I did wonder if they might be NC levels but I couldn't really work it out and school haven't really explained. DD (yr1) is happily playing on the games and has worked her way through level 1 (without doing the lessons I might add because she thought they were pointless). School haven't set any work yet but she doesn't want to wait so I don't want to knock her enthusiasm. I will let her try some of the level 2 stuff then if she wants to, I am sure her teacher will tell her to stop if she doesn't want her to do it.

thanks

Hi nonicknames:

DD2 was much the same. Found Level 1 stuff (which is where most Y1 pupils will be at this point) very straightforward and just did the quizzes.

At some point (maybe Level 2/ Maybe Level 3) there will be a 'crunch' where the lessons will help to explain the concept. We waited until a quizz went badly wrong (shreeks from child usually good indication) - and then went to review the lessons.

The my maths lessons are good but very dry - really a series of prepared slides (some are animated) but pretty low tech compared to what is available out there.

-----

apologies if this is repeating the obvious but there are some great free websites out there to support maths through games/ resources:

Woodland Junior school Maths Zone: resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/

Cool Maths for Kids (lessons & games): www.coolmath4kids.com/

Multiplication dot com: www.multiplication.com

Maths Champs: www.mathschamps.co.uk/#home

--------

As you've said tons of games on my maths - sinking fast (memory game) and snaky sums (timestable practice) are great fun. You can explore games by NC Level (to help determine if they're appropriate).

thank you - she has started some of the level 2 stuff now, playing around with the lessons and games and she has done some of the homework bits too - she loves the shapes and fractions, not remotely interested in addition etc.
