Head of English - spelling mistakes

How bothered would you be? Would you do/say anything? I am normally not a complainer at all and am very happy with the school overall.

Have you ever made a mistake and not noticed until too late?

Toadsrevisited · 07/05/2014 20:40

Depends on what the mistake is and where it is- in a hasty email, I would overlook it but in a wall display for children to learn from, I would mention it in a friendly way. Repeated mistakes would be a concern...

In official correspondence I'd be quite peeved if the head of English made a spelling mistake, assuming not a typo. I might point it out, but depends on whether you want to make waves with a school you're happy with

KatieKaye · 07/05/2014 20:54

Would it bother you if the Head of Maths wrote that pi equals 3.74?
Or if the Head of French wrote "atre" instead of "etre"?

If so, then you are not being unreasonable.

(I'd be really bothered. And I would be hoisting my judgy-pants up to my armpit, because I believe spelling and punctuation are important.)

Oh yes, I certainly have made mistakes. It just feels so wrong where the teacher is teaching my son how to spell!
First mistake was in the summary section in his report (conscientious was spelt wrong). Today I was flicking through his work and noticed an error in the feedback he was given for a piece of work (embedded was spelt wrong).

There may be many more, I don't see an awful lot of it.
I do not want to make waves, no, just need to let off steam about it perhaps!
Not typos, both handwritten, so just not a great speller I think.

Yes katie, both those errors would be bizarre. But would you do/say anything about it? When does the opportunity to say something arise?

I doubt I will. Just moaning.

Mistakes can be made especially when you could have 5 or 6 classes of 30 people a day who all want their work marked ASAP.
Also I once sent out a newsletter with don't forget your willys instead of wellies.i didn't know until parents started taking the piss !

KatieKaye · 07/05/2014 21:07

TBH, I probably wouldn't, bcos I'd be worried (rightly or wrongly) that it might influence the way they viewed my child. People do get very offended when spelling errors or grammatical mistakes in work-related matters are pointed out.
But that's the crux, isn't it? This person is not just a teacher, who should be leading by example, but also the Head of English.
Sorry - that's not terribly helpful in terms of actually providing constructive advice. Sad
Maybe you could have a chat about spelling in general with the teacher and ask how you can help your DC as you've noticed some mistakes creeping into his work?

Newsletters (and mistakes therein) - my top tip is before you distribute anything, print it out and proofread it in hard copy, using a ruler to go down each line so that your eye doesn't jump over the text. You will pick up so many errors that you simply don't notice onscreen.
I learnt that one the hard way!

I remember when I was at school, and our English teacher was talking about job interviews with us. She was head of English and she said that if she receives an application with a spelling mistake, it is automatically rejected - because it is for an English teacher.
