Problem with son's handwriting

My ds who is 9 has had some concerns raised regarding his handwriting. Including holding his pen with a thumb and 3 fingers, and shaking whilst writing.

His ta is doing exercises to strengthen the muscles in his arm and wrist, which we need to do at home as well.

I'm worried about what is causing this and how common. Also, are certain pens easier to write with?

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

My DD has difficulty with fine motor due to low muscle tone and shaky hands (she has mild CP). This makes handwriting and other fine motor tasks very hard though she does her best!

Have you seen an OT? They may be able to provide a grip to help. If not, a laptop might be the way forward especially for extended pieces of work and SATS etc. Your school should be able to make a referral if they haven't already.

Good that TA doing hand strengthening exercises. Would also help to work on core strength as this area is key to fine motor skills. Good seating can help too if this is an issue.

could your son be hyper moblie (bendy) in his hands? does he struggle with zips, buttons, opening crisp packets etc? I would ask for a referral to the ot.

I'll definitely get a referral to ot, thanks to you both for your advice.

Ds has always been hyper sensitive, and I wasn't sure if there was a link?

He is able to do zips, buttons etc. However he goes through stages where he does involuntary movements or makes a sound in the back of his throat, a bit like ticks? I've spoke to the gp a while ago who said he'll outgrow it.

When he is excited he'll shake too.

I really want to make sure he gets all the help he needs.
