Circle time with mixed classes

The DC's school have assembly on some days and circle time within the class on the other days.

However, this term, on one day they have started having circle time in mixed age/class groups i.e. it seems like a "circle" will only contain 1 or 2 children from any given class but at least 1 child from every class in the school.

This isn't something I've ever come across before and wonder if anyone else's DC go to school that does similarly and what the idea/benefits of it are? The only thing I could think of was that it is to promote friendships across the school?

DS says he thinks it is "stupid" and DD doesn't really have an opinion beyond being very pleased that a friend from another class who she doesn't see very often is in her "circle".

I know several schools that do it. It is very artificial to spend all your time with a peer group born between 1st Sept and 31st August- you don't do it anywhere else.

My sons grammar school has this type of thing a few times each week but it's in school houses. I think it's a great idea and a really useful way of getting to know people who are older/younger than you.
