piece of string

I think this may be a 'how long is a piece of string' question.
my son has been on a waiting list for our local and very popular state school since reception. he is now in year 2.
he is currently at 2 on the waiting list from 8.
I know no one knows how long he could wait but...

  1. Do you think it's likely he will get in at some point if he is now at 2?
and
  1. I am hoping that the transition from Y2 to Y3 is often one of flux and that some people will change schools. Do you think this is likely to be the case?
also
  1. if he does get a place, how much time do we have to accept it (a few days or a few weeks or what?).
Can't stand my sons current school much longer!

I have no idea about the answer to your questions, but you can appeal for a place in Y3. They are not restricted to infant class sizes so you have a better chance of winning an appeal.

I think it really is a piece of string question!

It depends on how many places in a school year (if 120 probably more chance than if 15), plus how much mobility (affected not only by how many people move out, but how many people move in - and bump you down the list again).

One of DD's friends was on the waiting list for a state school since Reception. She reapplied at Y3 and was again rejected. She doesn't live close enough to the school (although it is her catchment school) to keep her near the top - every time she gets close someone else moves into the area and she moves down again. Her mum has now all but given up any chance of a place.

As PP said though, you have a better chance of getting in on appeal in Y3 as Infant class size rules no longer apply.

Is the desired school in an affluent area. If so, the end of Y2 may be when some parents move their DC to private. If not, there is no obvious reason to change school. If you dislike your current school so much, would there be any other options you could go on waiting lists for?

Is there anything you can do to improve your experience at your current school?
