your walking distance to school?

I've recently found out my son got into our first choice primary school! It's out of our catchment area, it's 1.5 miles away and takes us 25 mins to walk there. What do you all think about that walking distance? Is it do able? Do any of you walk the same distance? What's your walking distance to your child's primary school?

2.5 miles but no we don't walk it as the roads are hazardous and not suitable for walkers or bikers sadly.

Before when we lived in Epsom we had a 2 mile round journey (as children at 2 different schools) we biked that every day as there was plenty of biking areas I do miss that.

Primary was originally 5 mins walk, but then we moved and it would have taken 15 mins, which is fine physically but we usually got the bus anyway as it was on a quick and regular route.

20 mins at a hoof. It's good, we always bump into other children to walk to school with. The walk home can be more of a dwawdle with various school mates. Cheaper than gym membership if you are walking quickly for an hour and. 20 min a day. Brilliant. Just get a good raincoat. Seriously, it's enjoyable.

My daughter used to walk 1.5 mile to our out of catchment school. We then moved into catchment and it became 1 mile. I think 1.5 miles is perfectly ok.

Ours is a mile and a quarter and takes 25-30 minutes to walk. And it's our catchment school. And we live in a town (so not rural) and the furthest point of the catchment is further than that. So don't see a problem with yours ...

forgot to say - we generally cycle. It makes the journey much quicker. No reason why a 4 year old can't cycle this distance- they just need to build up to it (neighbour's pre-school child cycles there and back!)

1.25miles, 25 mins.

Dd1 really struggled in reception as she was so tired and it is very hilly countryside here. Dd2 was younger so I just carried on using the double buggy and dd1 could jump in and out as she pleased.

Contrary to the numerous threads on here that one should be hounded out of town for such an offence, no-one batted an eyelid - rather more were surprised I was choosing to walk over driving. Dd2 is a less tired child and walked it fine

Good to hear you might get some lifts as, especially early on or near the end of term, mine would struggle to do it every day.

No idea but about 20-30 metres! Will take us 30 secs or possibly a minute if we dawdle Grin

Before you hate me we got NONE of our chosen schools and I was actually looking forward to the school journey chats.

about a mile - dd usually uses micro scooter and when she was in reception I used to use the strap from her toddler rucksack to pull her along if she got too tired (think they might sell specially made ones now) - somedays we would have never have got to school without it! Also agree with recommendation above of investing in a good waterproof and would add gortex lined boots so you don't get soggy feet on rainy days.

1.5 miles. I intend to walk in the summer, drive in winter.

MrsPear · 27/04/2014 19:37

0.6 according to LA - can you tell that I applied this year! - and we walk in about 10 minutes but I will leave 15 minutes so no stress.

Blackmouse · 27/04/2014 19:40

five min walk
yet people on my street drive

Cies · 27/04/2014 20:16

A seven minute adult walk. Down hill there , uphill back. Es goes on his balance bike and I race after him in the morning , and pull him up in the afternoon .

supadupapupascupa · 27/04/2014 20:19

less than 10 mins :-)

BigBirdFlies · 27/04/2014 20:55

15-20 minutes walk to primary with dd2.
Dd1 has less that 10 minutes walk to her secondary.

Oblomov · 27/04/2014 21:21

20 minute walk
