My daughter was really flying along last year ( year 1) This year we have been kept more in the dark as to how she is doing. In October we were told she was 2b / low 2a's across the board ( which I know is pretty good and should be happy) We had a parents evening before Easter and wasn't really told much more. It was quite negative and we came away feeling not much progress had happened since October ( same targets etc ) We were hoping she would be a level 3 at the end of year 2 but now not convinced. This is a piece of writing she had in her room ( loves writing stories) It is not finished and I know it is only a small sample:

Bethan, Frannie and Joe were tydiying up the house when they hered a knock on the door. They rushed downstairs to see who it was at the front dorr. They found a strange looking boy. He had green eyes, fair hair and fair skin. Bethan was going to say "who are you ?" But luckily Joe put his hand over her mouth and said " you mustn't say that that's rude". When Bills Mum had gone she turned round and said " this is Bill !" You must play with him nicely and you must behave as his only Frannies age. In there head was there secret about the wardrobe, oh yes, the magic wardrobe, now I will tell you about it later.

Punctuation and spelling are as written. She has neat joined up handwriting.

We live in a very competitive area and level 3's could make a big difference later on in deciding which senior school she will attend ( It probably seems crazy if you don't live in this kind of place) I am anticipating a few negative comments but really hope someone in the know may level it the best they can and maybe give some pointer as to what you would expect from a level 3 writer.

Thanks in advance.

I'd be very surprised if y2 SATS had any bearing on a grammar school place. I mean seriously, that's madness.

2a heading towards level 3. She has the 'flair' needed for a 3, but not yet the technical accuracy.

There are no fine bands for level 3 at KS 1 but ofsted translates any level 3 into a 3b. This means that these pupils will be expected to achieve 5a or even level 6 at ks2 for good or outstanding progress ( expected progress won't cut it any more- described as requiring improvement) so if a child is 3c they are unlikely to be given more than a 2a as they are unlikely to make that level of progress. The writing sample you showed is good particularly if your dd is only 6 but I wouldn't put it above a 3c and would need to see a range of other writing to be secure.

Be careful you don't stress your child out too... If she loves writing, just let her do it without grading.

My son was bog standard average until year 5 where he started to do slightly better in literacy. Now he's in year six he is flying. He will do way better in his sats, in every subject, than we ever imagined he would when he was six and nothing special. Level five across the board, six in literacy.

Your daughter has plenty of time. Give her that time. Let her enjoy school and learning for just now and don't worry so much. She will pick up on your panic and she doesn't need to.

Panic and disappointed for a 6 year old. SATS are really not important OP and neither are levels.
It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of their education.
Take a chill pill and let her be instead of setting her up for years of trying to make a certain grade. Because no matter how much you think you cover up your disappointment or joy, the dc pick up on it, they're not daft.
