I have been struggling with my dcs' bed time for years so desperate to know how everyone else manage. How do you manage to fit in everything such as reading, homework, dinner, activities etc after school and still manage to go to bed by 7 - 7.30pm. What time do your dcs eat their tea? Do you eat as a family together? Dh hardly come home much before 7pm from work!

It's not a class distinction because my son is the only one in his class (northern private school) who calls it dinner and we are probably one of only a couple of (what would be considered traditionally) working class families in the class.

It always confuses my kids friends when they come over & I say 'supper time' (@5pm) as they all call it tea.
Tea to me is cup of tea & biscuit at 4ish. Dinner is (smart) dinner at about 8pm.
My kids have supper at 5, DH & I have supper at 730/8.
Dinner happens at my parents house if they have people round.

'tea' for me is an 'unsubstantial meal between the main meal at lunchtime and the main meal in the evening.

Dinner or tea (used interchangeably) is the main evening meal, supper is a biscuit before bedtime in our house. Actually, we don't say supper at all, but if we did, that is what it would refer to.

We eat alk together at 6-30 pm

My children have hot school dinners.

Then they have a cold snack (sandwich, crisps, fruit and something sweet) after school but before their activity (about 4pm)

Followed by another hot meal after the activity (about 7 - 8, depending on the. Child and the activity).

We only ever get to eat together at the weekends. Hmm

Oh dear, I don't think our tea/dinner discussion was meant to be controversial! I took what morepotatoprints said as light hearted banter. Was I wrong ?

Hardly like to mention that I'm giving no-one breakfast tomorrow because dd1 has a friend visiting so we're doing brunch out.....

In from school at 3.30-4.15...snack eg toast, fruit, cheese and crackers, drink.

Tea at 5.45-6.00ish for children (16,13,7)

Homework 6.45ish at kitchen table (for younger children) whilst I tidy kitchen.

Bath and bed from 7.30pm for 7 year old. Lights out 8pm. (Sleeps til 8am)

Supper for me and DH at about 10.30pm when he gets in from work.

DS3 is 7 in Y2. He gets in from school at either 3.45 or 5.15 depending on if he's been at after-school club which is two nights a week. We aim to eat between 5.30 and 6 as DH gets home around 5.30 as he works local to home. He gets ready for bed at 7.20 and reads until 8pm when we put his light out.
