DS doesn't draw anything or even try to draw anything. He has drawn a few reasonable faces under coercion but has never drawn a person or an animal or similar voluntarily. It's not that he draws and it's unrecognisable, he just doesn't draw.

He actually has quite good pen control, good tripod grip which he self-corrects, and can trace over letters about 4cm high well which he likes to do. He is attempting to write his own name and, although not well formed, he puts the right number of marks for letters and the letter formation is 'emerging'.

Should I be worried that he doesn't draw pictures though? There are no other concerns about his development.

DD is 4 years 3 months and has just started to draw (on paper) faces / people / animals etc (in the past 4 weeks).

I got her a chalkboard / whiteboard for her 4th birthday and it has encouraged her to draw more and she also practices writing her name now. She prefers the whiteboard and markers but its messy!

Before this she would 'draw' with her magnetic sketch board. I think it was easier for her as there is less of a pen pressure control issue and it was easy for her to clear the board and start again if she made a mistake. Maybe one of these might encourage your DS to start drawing?

My DS didn't draw anything until 4.3. Then, within a space of weeks, he was drawing all kinds of things - people standing in the rain, sunset over houses... He stopped again after starting reception, wasn't interested, but has just re-started and comes home with pictures in his book bag every day. I think with some children it just 'clicks' at a certain point, but up until that point they seem not to be interested.

I was told by a former colleague who was Head of Art at the school I used to work at that I was unusual weird because I don't doodle. Never have.

Apparently, as drawing goes back to the very early days of human beings, the theory was that everyone did it but I never developed any love for it. My writing is fine, despite being left handed, I just don't enjoy drawing or doodling.

But I am a bit weird in other ways too!!!

My ds always refused to draw. In primary school, you needed a magnifying glass to see his pictures he hated drawing so much! Eventually, he went to art college and is doing an art related degree.
