DBS check for parent volunteers?

I have a DD in year 4 and a DS in reception. I have always gone into school when I can to read with the children or give a talk or something. Not regularly, about once a term. Recently I have been going into year 4 around once a month ( not set times, just when I'm free) to teach French as the teachers are frankly totally incapable of doing if.
I was asked yesterday when I was there by DD teacher if I had a DRB check because " someone" had asked . I suppose it could be a parent but I have had a lot of parents say they they are really pleased I'm doing it and the kids really enjoy it.
In fact I DO have a DBS check as I do a French lunch club ( paid) at another school. The DBS isn't specific to the other school as it's via a private company so I suppose I could give a copy of that to school. However, I will soon be stopping running the lunch club and won't be working for the private company so surely that DBS check won't be valid?
Do parents need a DBS check to go and help at school? I am never alone with the children as the class teacher sits in as well

The current DBS system when applied allows you to register for update service within 19 days of it being issued. This means that the employee signs up to this for a cost of £13 on a yearly basis and the DBS is transportable allowing you to take it to any school or educational setting. All the new employer has to do is see your certificate and check your details on the update service. This can be done on a regularly basis which is much better as long as the employee signs up within 19 days of a new DBS arriving and pays a cost of £13 a year!

I have had one to help at my dd's school with school trips and things like that

Galena - as a Governor you do need to be checked. You will visit the school when the children are there and all governors must be checked. You could easily be in a classroom when a teacher has to pop out and you gave access to the children. Ask the Head/Office to check the regulations and get it organised.

Zombie thread 🙄

A poster said they wished to revive it, way back up thread!

The voluntary one is free. School can do it for you.

A poster said they wished to revive it, way back up thread

That was in February and was answered at the time. The thread was revived again this morning by someone responding to the original query and posting information that is already on the thread.

I'm with SuburbanRhonda. This is a ZOMBIE THREAD.

I think that DBS should be portable, but last for a specific length of time, so you could use it at multiple locations. Perhaps have it renewed each year, because it's true that it's really only valid on the day that the information is checked and the certificate issued.

Don't see how you can get round that though.

Hi. I am trying to get a voluntary placement in one nursery to enroll for a Childcare l2 qualifications..first teachers told me they can't give it to me because my son was there there and it could disturb him..bu there was at least 2 mums teaching their children..when finally my son went to school they offered me this placement..I was very happy They told me to do DBS check which I did and then they told me I need to have a Criminal Check from Poland (i live in England for more than six years) and untill I'll bring it,I can't be volunteer.. My question is..Do I need to provide this check and can I be supervised volunteer untill that day? I know a Polish lady who is still waiting for this check and she is teaching 1 to 1 a disabled child. It's not about this check..it's more about it's unfair that I can't be volunteer and the other one can be a Teacher without even qualifications. Thank you

The answer is that it is for the school to decide what background checks are necessary. Normally a DBS check would be required where there is a possibility of the person being on their own with a pupil. Some schools will accept volunteers into the school if they are never going to be on their own with pupils but many schools take the view that they cannot guarantee that, so insist on all volunteers and staff having to be DBS checked, that is they are in what is called regulated activity.
The guidance "keeping children safe" indicates that the school is responsible for ensuring that all checks they think are necessary are carried out. If the school have decided that a criminal check from Poland is necessary then they have the right to decide that.

My husband had one - he reads once a week with individuals (he helps in yr 6 and works with those struggling with reading for their sats).

Pud2 · 25/09/2017 22:38

You have to have one for regular visits, or, if you are going to have unsupervised access. All governors have to have one too.

AgaWozniak · 26/09/2017 05:21

Thank you. Nursery is claiming it's a home office rule..I have done this already and I am waiting for a certificate to come.

MummyItsallaboutyou · 26/09/2017 05:30

I've just gone though the process so I can volunteer at my DS's school. They said they couldnt accept the form from my current job. It was a very quick to do online.

insancerre · 26/09/2017 06:23

Aga
The nursery does have to do extra checks on people who have lived or worked abroad, it s a requirement by law

Standard at my kids school for all parent volunteers to have DBS - not allowed to start helping until you have it....

jamdonut · 26/09/2017 18:40

We have to have our DBS re-applied for every three years in the school I work in.
My daughter helps voluntarily in her old school and if they have a gap of 3 months not visiting school, they have to re-apply.
