Why isn't my DCs school striking?

So I've been a bit self absorbed recently and am not as politically aware as I'd like. I just noticed that my DCs school is open as usual on Wednesday when there is a national teachers strike. They closed for the last strike and sent a letter to parents explaining how strongly they felt about the cause.

I wondered what has changed? Were some of the aims of the last strike met? Are there different unions involved? Are less schools getting involved this time? FWIW, I would strongly support the school in defending the rights of teachers.

I've tried a quick google search but couldn't find a clear comparison between this strike and the last. I feel a bit shy to ask the teachers.

I may get tied up with the DCs for a bit but will be back when I can. Thank you anyone who can enlighten me!

It's irritating to hear about apathetic colleagues who refuse to support the actions of their union but would be quite happy to take on any perceived benefits gained from a strike.

I realise you are not one of those self-same colleagues, but it makes me cross to hear about their sabotage for silly reasons like they don't want to lose a day's pay. Who does?

The Professional Association of Teachers (now Voice) was founded in the 70s as a no stike union in response to ongoing industrial action by other unions.

With one day's strike in 150 odd years, I wouldn't call the ATL a striking union either.

mrz · 25/03/2014 07:39

I didn't include ATL because I thought someone would bring up THAT one day feenie Grin

I see what you did there, mrz Wink

I agree with Feenie and MM5. I found out today that DS's teacher is NUT but won't be striking. I feel that she should support the decision of her union but lots of parents are on Facebook saying how professional the school is being to have every class open tomorrow. Definitely damned if you do and damned if you don't.

My daughter if off , not becUse her teacher is in the NUT but because her teacher does admin on Wednesdays and the teacher who usually covers the class IS NUT. They are not allowed to swap admin days as this would be seen as the teacher covering for a striking colleague.
Not too bothered as I'm self employed so juggled my diary but it must be hard for some parents.

DS's school will announce which classes are open at 8.30 tomorrow morning. Helpful Hmm I know they don't have to give any notice but I think parents would be much more supportive if teachers gave some warning. I'm a striking teacher.
