It's frustrating when a child is taught to see gaining a level 4 as failing (to gain a 5), rather than as an achievement.

My dc, as it happens, are thriving. They love the clearly defined goals and the very specific feedback. But then their school is not putting them under pressure. Yes, the revision is intense, and to the exclusion of most other learning, but the teachers are clear that the SATs test the teachers, not the children. There is not talk about passing or failing, only about doing your best. And there is plenty of talk about the fun that will be had after SATs week.

(I still hate the SATs for what they turn Y6 into.)

Sats data does end up being looked at by secondary schools though, even if they do their own assessment tests. It also plays a part in FFT data which plenty of secondary schools use to calculate predicted and target grades. Obviously every child should be looked at as an individual but SATS data does play a part until it's demonstrated that that child's targets should be changed. Always believed it wasn't that important until I started working in a secondary shool.

Yes, agree with RINGING. Schools may do own assessments, but in terms of the schools tracking progress and being judged by Ofsted, the key comparisons are between key stage data. So a pupils predicted grades and set I ed by the level achieved in KS2 sats and the schools GCSE results will be partly judged by how much value they have added from that starting point.
When schools decide to do interventions, to boost pupils who are not making enough progress, they are looking at the KS2 data as well as any baseline testing they may do on entry. This might by Midyis or CAT tests, which basically measure IQ.

At my ds's school they streamed them from day 1 by SATS results, then reset at Christmas. A whole term is a long time to be in the wrong stream.

DD's school ignore SATs as much as possible. No stress here yet and dd is a real worrier! She is having a lot of fun in Year 6, which is great and quite unusual judging by threads on here, but I am slightly concerned that she will go to Secondary with children who have been over prepared for SATs all year and might not look as bright in comparison. Must not worry though...

I don't think the children know each other's marks unless they talk about them. I've told dd to say her mum won't let her discuss them! (she did mention that as something which worried her slightly!)
