Safe place?

DD came home from school on Friday talking about 'safe places'. Apparently their teacher shouts, for example 'safe place-washroom' or 'safe place - school office' and all the children in the class have to get there as quickly as possible. She can't tell me the circumstances in which they would have to use the safe place though, just that they've been practising it.

Is this standard practice and something a school would normally practice and have in place? I've not heard of it before. She's in reception. Other children have said the same and she's not generally one for fiction so I think it's happening as she describes.

Our school have safe places think they introduced it in pe so the kids thought it was a game.

Sounds like a lock down drill used in such instances as an intruder coming into the building.

Thanks, pretty common practice then? I'll try to stop imagining scenarios in which they might need to use it for real....!

an increasing number of schools are introducing regular lock down drills. they are becoming as normal as fire practise. sadly, there is no escaping the fact they may be needed one day

What NickNacks said, or if the class had to be removed from another child for everyone's safety.

During year 1 a child prone to violent outbursts meant that DS and his class got used to evacuating the classroom. DS loved it as they got playground time with a ta while the poor little mite who had gone off on one was being peeled off the ceiling by two teachers.

our school used to have bomb alerts though as well as fire alarms which was a sign of the times with the IRA risk.
