Please tell me how many shirts/pinafores my dd will need

My DD's due to start reception in Sept and wants to wear a school uniform. The unform is special polo (get from school)or white shirts with grey or blue pinafore/skirt/trousers.
I'm not too sure how much she will need.
I've got her 2 x pinafores and 2 x 1/2 sleeved shirts and I was going to get her some long sleeved shirts.
Is 2 pinafores enough? I know this sounds mad but dd has got my ability to attract dirt and is a bit of a messy eater.
Any advice on nos of shirts and pinafores/skirts please?

All depends on how often you want to wash her clothes!

More clothes = less frequent washes

my ds started last sept and i bought 2 (school) polo's and a pack of asda polos with 5.... i like him to wear the white but omg the state of them at 3.20pm.... youll need a good stain remover if she is wearing white, think my ds will wear red ones this year....lol
ps... the black paint at school just dosent come out (even with vanish)..xx

We have 4 tops, 1 cardi and 1 jumper.

Then 2 pinafores and 2 skirts.

But we could get away with 2 skirts if necesssary.

I'd say a minimum of three per item - so you have one on, one in the wardrobe and one in the wash. That way you're not having to do any last minute washing if you have a couple of mucky days. Believe me, my eldest is in Yr4 in september and there are still weeks when he has to have clean uniform everyday because of ink/paint/mud spills.

laneydaye · 12/08/2006 13:35

my ds has one set for each day.....just in case i cant be bothered to do any washing..lol
i do know some parents who send the kids in the same uniform all week...

geekgrrl · 12/08/2006 13:42

I'm with laney - am erratic with housework at the best of times, so five outfits ensures that there will always be a clean one.

Bozza · 12/08/2006 13:47

Would say two pinafores wasn't enough. More potential to get dirty than just a skirt.

Joceybean · 12/08/2006 22:04

When my dd started I bought her a polo top for each day, one cardi, one jumper, two pinafores and a skirt . That allowed me to always have clean uniform in the wardrobe if the washing was a bit behind.

skirts and pinafores are about £5 in asda. buy another three and make your life simple

long sleeved shirts get dirtier

couldnt she also wear the white polos from asda?

what about cardigans / jumpers?

its very hard to get ( cheap) school uniform during the rest of the school year, so if she is between sizes get some of the next size too (assuming you have the £££££ right now)

julienetmum · 12/08/2006 23:54

I'm hoping to manage with 3, 2 of them won't fit her for much longer though, maybe til Christmas so I am hoping the school swop shop has some larger ones in the autumn.

We also have 3 shirts, just one jumper at the moment, they are so expensive I'm waiting to see if the swop shop has any more.

This is kind of off the subject a bit but have you checked that your dd can get the pinafores on and off by herself? As an ex-reception teacher, there is nothing more frustrating than having to prise children out of clothes for PE sessions . I know they look really cute in pinafores but skirts are so much easier for getting in and out of.

lilmamma · 13/08/2006 11:23

my youngest is messy,so he needs a clean shirt every day,the multi packs from asda are cheap enough,i also get short sleeved as the long sleeves and jumper on top,are too warm especially as the schools are centrally heated.I get him 4 pants and 2 jumpers. All my children prefare the short sleeved shirts.

bea · 13/08/2006 12:24

my dd started last sept... we managed to get away with... 1 pinafore, 1 skirt, 2 polo shirts, 1 cardi and 1 sweatshirt...

julienetmum · 13/08/2006 14:46

They are not allowed skirts at dd's school until P3 and the pinafores are a bit difficult as they fasten as the shoulder with two buttons but since they specify this style along with shirt and tie I guess they are happy to assist the children getting dressed.

Gobblunarcharsky · 13/08/2006 14:52

If I were you I'd stick with 2 pinafores. Ds1 has 2 pairs of trousers (or shorts if summer) and that works fine. They stay clean for quite a few days, probably because they are those teflon coated ones from M&S) and they can be tumble dried so it's easy to wash and dry them on an evening ready for the next day if you need to.

Gobblunarcharsky · 13/08/2006 14:54

Hmmm, having read other posts, hadn't considered about the top of a pinafore being more likely to get dirty than just a skirt. Can you tell I only have boys?!? 3 then maybe, but they are easy to wash and tumble so I wouldn't overdo it personally.

SecondhandRose · 13/08/2006 14:55

Both my children are filthy after school every day and both have clean clothes on each day. My DS is worse age 11 than DD age 7.

Mercedes · 13/08/2006 20:03

I think I'd better get her a skirt and some more shirts. She won't be going to her childminder's any more so I'm going to have to feed her every night. The possibility of having to do a washing every night as well as cook is probably beyond me.

Dd always wore trousers on PE day in reception because they are so much easier for her to get on/off than the tights and skirt/pinafore combo (particularly the tights).

Bozza · 13/08/2006 21:33

I started off with two pairs of trousers for DS and it really wasn't enough. He was always going on the park and getting muddy in the winter. And also spilling and getting glue on them etc. I found we got longer out of his shorts in the summer.
