Reception child missing 4-6 weeks of school

We found out today that the sprained ankle that has taken over a week to heal is, in fact, a fracture Sad. Ds's leg is in a full plaster cast and he is likely to be off for 4-6 weeks.

I am worried, not so much about the academic side (though he is already a summer-born boy, so it is a slight concern), but more about the social side. He is pretty quiet and shy and just starting to 'come out of his shell' as the teacher puts it, though at recent parties we have been to his interaction with his peers has been minimal.

He does enjoy school and, in fact, the injury occurred at play-time during a 'spinning game', so I don't think he's completely friendless, but he can't really afford to be out of action for all this time, either. We are relatively new to the area so, while we will do as much as we can to get some friends round while he's off, it's not going to be a case of people coming round regularly.

I am just feeling a bit anxious about it and would like to hear from others who have had similar happen, or from teachers, that this is not going to affect him long-term.

A friends child broke his leg two days before starting reception in September. He was in a cast for four weeks and was sent home with a frame, which he couldn't manage. So they had to privately hire a child's wheelchair from the local mobility aids place as the NHS wouldn't provide one, saying that a frame was sufficient. Yes it sucks and no, you chouldn't have to pay for it for a child, but google or go through your yellow pages and contact all the mobility equipment providers you can and get him a wheelchair. He doesn't need to be off for that amount of time on medical grounds and he shouldn't be off on accessibility grounds either. Cost my friend about £30 a week for three weeks.

My son broke his tibia in the playground in the first week of year 1. We did exactly what the hospital told us to do, he was off school for weeks (I can't remember now exactly how long but it seemed a lifetime) but went back to school once he'd got a weight bearing cast. I spoke to his teacher before he went back, I think we started with half days with me going in with him and built up from there. I borrowed a wheelchair from the Red Cross because he was not good on crutches, it made getting to school and getting around much simpler.

When the cast came off the NHS waved us goodbye - I'm hoping that you are better treated than we were and are offered physiotherapy.

DD was off for 4 weeks of Reception in October for an op. She settled right back in without a problem.

We had a little boy with a broken leg (bad break in 2 places) attend reception in a wheelchair has the doctor said why he needs to stay off for so long?
