i take both of my boys( 5.5 yrold and 22 months) to library at least once a week luckily its not far from us . today DS was over excited and aggravated in library , it was nearly his nap time, but i wanted to squeeze the library trip as some books were about be overdue . the librarian did bare with his excitement for a bit and he was running around making me chase him , with embarrassment . but then as soon i went to borrow some books for older DS , SHE SHOUTED "THAT'S ITTTTTTTTT I CANT TAKE ANY MORE SCREAMING!!!!! SORRY I WOULD HAVE TO ASK YOU TO LEAVE THE LIBRARY LUCKILY NOT MANY CLIENTS ARE HERE .OTHERWISE I WOULD OF TOLD YOU TO LEAVE EARLIER . IN THE MEAN TIME I WANTED TO GET SOMETHING SCANNED FOR OLDER ONE TO TAKE HOME AND SHE STARTED EXPLAINING THAT THE THINGS WOULD EXPAND AND I COULDN'T FILTER WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT???????????? I was so tearfull and while my older son asked me mum!!! look i want to take this book!!!!!!! and i asked him with dry throat to leave the book and we will come again some other day. ( my son 22 months hasn't developed many words or talking yet that is why he screams with excitement , my health visitor is coming tomorrow to discuss his speech concerns with me. but i felt bad, and shouted at , while the librarian has no clue clue what i am going through ? as having concentration problems with the older one and younger ones speech issues.

What does being "taxpayer funded" have to do with her behaviour? Any service employee be it private sector (incidently which is funded by me paying) or public should be polite.

I remember years ago my dc were a little noisy in the library. they weren't screaming and the librarian was critical and I apologised.

Perhaps she shouldn't have shouted and I know it is upsetting for you and your ES but OOH your ys was causing a disturbance and it is hard to concentrate with alot of noise going on and she would probably get moaned at by other people there.

"What a horrid experience. My little boy (27 months) visits our local village library every Saturday morning. He always runs around and sings to himself."

How lovely for all the people trying to use the library in peace. Just because they're too polite to say anything doesn't mean this is appropriate.

Floggingmolly · 21/02/2014 10:52

You should have left. Why did you think a children's play area indictates children are welcome to run around the entire library screaming? Hmm
I would have been embarrassed at having to be told, actually.

Children really shouldn't be running round libraries screaming. It really sounds like she was having a bad day, you say she snapped when you went back for books. She probably thought you were leaving when you returned the first books. She didn't react well but you can't stay there if your toddler is behaving this way.

ExcuseTypos · 21/02/2014 16:48

She shouldn't have shouted at you, she was very rude.

Please don't let it put you off going again, but I would be prepared to take him out if he screams.

ninaprettyballerina · 21/02/2014 18:45

She's totally out of order. If she was unhappy with you she should have had a quiet word. Nobody should be shouted at in public places.

Rude jobsworth

Unless a child is ill or had an accident, screaming in the library is unacceptable. Perhaps she could have handled it better? Perhaps you should have taken your little one out sooner? Looks like a 6 and two 3s to me. Am sure if there is a librarians.net an upset librarian has posted her side of the story and is receiving support from people able to see things from her perspective.

MidniteScribbler · 22/02/2014 06:19

she could have approached you in a polite and gentle way.

She shouldn't have to. It doesn't take a genius to realise that a child running and screaming in a library is unacceptable.

eddiemairswife · 22/02/2014 11:50

Perhaps she had to shout to be heard above the screaming.

I have 3 children so I know what it's like to take toddlers to libraries, but I'm sometimes surprised by what some parents, nannies and au pairs let children do there. I've seen toddlers emptying bookcases and dumping books on the floor and standing on books while the carer just lets them.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/02/2014 14:19

Don't let you be put off going, but I would apologise and forget about it. If you have books to return/renew maybe you could do this online whilst the toddler has a nap? If he is trying to get out of the library explain its pushchair or reins and carry it through.

How did the appointment with the HV go?
