Year 1/2 words confusion

slp123 · 14/02/2014 20:15

I know there are many experts here...I thought all the year words lists were now null and void. Apparently my FS2 child had an assessment today and knows all the reception key words and nearly all her Y1 and Y2 words. We then have a list of some she doesn't yet know. I thought schools were no longer using these lists?
Any experiences?

can't is a contraction of TWO words columngollum, can & not

mrz · 16/02/2014 09:56

U.S.A. is an abreviation of three words

columngollum · 16/02/2014 10:22

The expansion is beside the point. The user might not even know what it stands for.

There is a kilo of TNT under your bed.

You don't look it up. You just open the front door and run!

mrz · 16/02/2014 10:31

You do seem to enjoy missing the point columngollum

columngollum · 16/02/2014 10:40

A word is an utterance which means something, according to my dictionary.

The word TNT means something to me. Of course the people who can't understand it without its expansion are likely to be removed from the gene pool anyway, so it's not a major problem.

A morpheme can be an utterance which has meaning so I suggest you may need a new dictionary

tiredbutnotweary · 16/02/2014 11:39

No collum, the letters TNT mean something to you, just like the letters NUT, standing for National Union of Teachers, are not the same as the word nut. One is a word and, as I'm sure you know, the other is pronounced en/yoo/tee not n/u/t.

Letters can stand for words but with the exception of a, and I, are not words in their own right.

columngollum · 16/02/2014 12:31

That one word has multiple meanings is not new, bow/bow, sow/sow, tired.

And now you have your nutty teachers.

I'm not convinced of the need for exclusivity, mrz. Meaning is big enough to share.

mrz · 16/02/2014 12:51

The fact you do not seem to know the difference between words and contractions and abreviations speaks volumes columngollum but carry on displaying your philosophy of everything it's fascinating and explains a great deal.

columngollum · 16/02/2014 15:51

And the fact that you seem to be unaware of subsets and supersets says equally as much. You can deny as much as you wish. The dictionary definition of a word is quite clear. Your definition of a word is irrelevant.

mrz · 16/02/2014 16:30

Anything anyone says that disagrees with your opinion is irrelevant as we well know columngollum as I said previously perhaps it's time you got a new dictionary

columngollum · 16/02/2014 16:40

You're not disagreeing with my definition; you're disagreeing with my dictionary. If I want a definition of a word I'll look there, not in an Internet forum.

mrz · 16/02/2014 17:23

No columngollum I'm disagreeing with what you say is your dictionary definition ... although I suspect it is more about your interpretation of the dictionary definition.
