Reception - hearing test fail

I have a letter today in DS book bag saying he's had a hearing test today and needs to be retested. I says nothing else - literally one sentence.

I understand from Dr Google that children fail for all sorts of reasons but I'm none the less concerned.

My son is bright with no language issues and no hearing issue that I've noticed.

Just wondering what % of kids 'fail' test and turn out to be fine.

We have a lot of other medical dramas and could do without this!!

DD failed her pre school hearing tests 4 times.
She was stubborn, not deaf.

As a TA I went into one of these medical assessments recently. One of the children failed the hearing test because she did not understand the instructions. They have headphones on and have to clap each time they hear a sound. I shouldn't worry about it too much. They will just do it again next time the nurse is in.

Mine failed. I am not sure why. She passed next time round. I honestly wouldn't worry.

Mine failed, something about "did not recognize all the sounds with her right ear." Will be re-tested. I don't think it's that serious- well generally not- if there was a big fail you would get referred to a specialist straight away, as we did for DS when he failed his eye test and we discovered he was really long-sighted with a lazy eye and squint! Shock.

It could also be due to the noisy classroom, being distracted etc rather than failing the test.

Both my DC have had quite a few hearing tests (DS has grommets) and there are quite a few instructions to follow for littlies, hopefully that's what it is.

I failed mine as well and it was nothing. I don't think I was concentrating very well that day Grin

A school hearing test isn't conducted in a very controlled environment (and I assume fairly quickly as they have a whole class to get through) so it could easily mean nothing.

However, I would add that my youngest has (glue ear related) hearing issues and it took ages to identify even though at the time they were pretty severe. He could hear some frequencies much better than others which kind of masked it. So I guess it's better to pick this stuff up and deal with it. (ds's hearing is much improved btw so even if there is an issue it might not be a permanent one)

Glue ear is pretty common in small children and can come and go. Has your ds had a cold recently?

bluebump · 03/02/2014 21:48

My DS failed first time around but passed the second time.

A proper hearing test will be performed under much more controlled circumstances.
I passed my pre-school hearing test and then spectacularly failed a random one at Primary School.
Turns out I am actually quite a lot deaf (almost deaf in one ear and with reduced hearing in the other) but coped remarkably well at school etc, and no one had really noticed I couldn't hear very well. Including my Mum who was mortified!

Ds (year 2) has just had his third set of grommets with severe glue ear.

He is bright and has minor pronunciation issues with language and a very good vocabulary. If he hadn't been under ENT (due to ear infections) I would never have thought he had hearing issues. He also passed the reception hearing test despite being fairly deaf at the time.

My dd1 failed hers on one side in reception last year. They retested at school a few weeks later and she passed.

All sorts of things can contribute to failing the hearing test such as background noise, being distracted, even a slight cold can affect hearing. My ds2 failed his second newborn test in the hospital because his breathing was too loud.
