I bet this is linked to the latest 'Change for life' healthy lifestyle campaign. They're pushing low fat dairy and sugar free drinks in the latest adverts Angry. Evil stuff.

There'll be a major food manufacturer behind it. One of Dave + Gideons mates I reckon.

capsium · 03/02/2014 18:26

It might be worth complaint to the LA if not an academy.

Christmascandles · 03/02/2014 18:26

Really Tits..... Blush That's made me really cross Angry .... will have to try harder for a reward, wtf. It's a pity they can't remember which child has which dietary needs isn't it...

I'd be having several words too if it were me. And if nothing else, it must be v confusing for your DS too.

capsium · 03/02/2014 18:26

And Ofsted.

3littlefrogs · 03/02/2014 18:28

Since when have TAs, lunchtime assistants and teachers been qualified paediatric dieticians?

Some of the rubbish that is spouted by these people is appalling.

Young children need a balanced diet that includes high protein, some fat and carbs. Their metabolism and nutritional needs are completely different from adults. Really - on what planet is cheese not a healthy choice for a child's lunch????

Double standards when it comes to school lunches are rife.

When they get to secondary school they are served some of the most unhealthy, revolting junk food that you can imagine. Including chips with everything.

3littlefrogs · 03/02/2014 18:30

Low fat foods that have been bulked up with starch and artificial sweeteners and diet drinks are really bad for children.

capsium · 03/02/2014 18:32

I would make a laminated label of dietary requirements for lunch box of child with specific diet. I'd have nice smiley faces next to the child's healthy choices. And lots of ticks.

Just to make it FOOLPROOF!!!

Bloodyteenagers · 03/02/2014 18:36

The problem is a lack of nutritional training.
Chances are the people who are having to monitor what goes into lunch boxes don't really have a clue. They hear the string stuff, dunkers etc aren't as healthy, or didn't used to be (not sure if these have had makeovers), so assume that it's all cheese products that are unhealthy.

Or because they don't understand how these foods fit into a healthy diet assume that they are fats and to be eaten occasionally.

When it comes to discussions about healthy eating, midday people are often overlooked and missed out. Yet they should be targeted to have extra training.

Damnautocorrect · 03/02/2014 18:41

Low fats normally higher in sugar / sweeteners - dicks.

How to give kids food issues in one easy step.

breatheslowly · 03/02/2014 18:42

I was going to say exactly what 3littlefrogs said. These people are just making stuff up.

VodkaRevelation · 03/02/2014 18:49

Tits, don't go in and have 'several words'. You'll be 'that' parent. A lunch time assistant said something ridiculous. It doesn't sound like Cheese is Bad is a school policy.

Speak to your child's teacher or send an email to the office to ask them to make sure lunchtime staff aren't saying stupid things to children.

nostress · 03/02/2014 19:28

Cheese is unhealthy because of its high fat and salt content. A 'balanced diet' however can have 'unhealthy' things. You need fat and salt in your diet. Some vitamins and minerals need fat to be absorbed into the body (fat soluble). Therefore a diet devoid of fat and stuffed full of salad, rice etc etc is unhealthy. You need salt in your body due to the electrolyte balance. Balance is the key. Children actually need more fat because they are growing.

Jinty64 · 03/02/2014 20:00

Cheese is not unhealthy.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 03/02/2014 20:04

If you ranked all the foods in a supermarket from most to least nutritious per serving, cheese would be in the top half if not top 20%.

JenBehavingBadly · 03/02/2014 20:04

Cheese is not unhealthy at all. This kind of bullshit pisses me off no end.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/02/2014 20:09

NOTHING is unhealthy if consumed as part of a varied healthy diet.

I don't rate milk or milk products but cheese in a lunch box in school is not an issue. Not along side low day low sugar no salt crap served in school dinners.

HumphreyCobbler · 03/02/2014 20:10

This kind of misunderstanding of what a healthy diet should include gives me the rage.

Everyone needs a bit of fat in their diet ffs. Especially children.

Even full fat milk is only 4% fat. That is a low fat food.

Lots of teachers do not know this, I was once lambasted in our staff room for buying full fat milk to go in coffee. They were horrified, and let me know how appallingly fattening this was - whilst they dipped their hob nobs into their tea Grin

Dillydollydaydream · 03/02/2014 20:13

What rubbish. Growing children need fat not semi/skimmed milk, reduced fat food etc.
No added sugar squash is worse than the sugared variety if you buy it from a supermarket that uses aspartame as a sweetener.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 03/02/2014 20:14

I wish dinner supervisors would realise that the school canteen is full of growing children not not overweight weight watchers attendees.

Honestly.

3littlefrogs · 03/02/2014 20:19

Some random woman in the supermarket commented on the fact that I was buying non-diet black current squash.
I informed her that my DC is an athlete and I was making up the coache's recommended fluid replacement drink with ordinary squash and a pinch of salt for a training session.
I swear she didn't believe me.
People are so ignorant it drives me mad.

3littlefrogs · 03/02/2014 20:21

Cheese eaten at the end of a meal after all sweet stuff can neutralise acid and prevent tooth decay except in dcs school the power has gone to the lunchtime supervisors heads and they want to micromanage the order of consumption so savoury has to be eaten before sweet. I have little time for their nonsense and just hope that my dc escape without some sort of eating disorder. Secondary seems altogether less concerned about diet.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/02/2014 20:32

Until schools stop serving slop with massive portions of low sugar low fat cake they should keep their nose out of lunch boxes unless particular repeat offenders give cause for concern. Then deal With THEM!!!
